Based on a Nigerian folktale, this tale was originally published 45 years ago; this is John Burningham’s version paired with his original artwork. It tells the story of how Rabbit is mistreated by Elephant and Hippo; he tricks them into a tug-of-war to prove he is as good as they are. He gives one end of the rope to each of them and they commence a tug-of-war against each other until they agree that Rabbit is not as weak as they thought. When they finally realize that they have been tricked by Rabbit, they vow to get even. The bullying by Hippo and Elephant and the unkind names they call Rabbit will work with the intended audience to teach a lesson on kindness.
