Quincy and Rainie are retired but still working on special projects for the police. They are also in the process of adopting their foster daughter - 13 year old Sharlah who had lived a horrific childhood. When Sharlah was 4, her older brother Telly beat their parents to death with a baseball bat and broken Sharlah's shoulder during the attack. As a child who has suffered abuse the couple is working very hard to make her part of their family and be not afraid of her past or her future. They have made a lot of progress when Quincy gets a call from the local sheriff to help with a homicide - four people are dead and the police are searching for a young man, who turns out to be Sharlah's brother Telly. Even through Sharlah hasn't talked to her brother in over 9 years, she is still afraid for him and tries to help him in her own way. That's all I can say about the plot without giving anything away but I will tell you that you will read this book very fast to find out how it ends.
I loved this book and stayed up way past my bedtime to finish it. It's wonderful to have these two characters back - along with their wonderful soon to be daughter - and in the capable storytelling hands of such a fantastic author!
Thanks to Dutton for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fast-paced books with lots of twists and turns.
When Sharlah May Nash was only five years old, her nine-year-old brother Telly Ray Nash beat their abusive father to death in order to save both of their lives. Eight years later, Sharlah's life is coming together; she's the foster daughter of retired FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and his partner Rainie Conner and about to be adopted by them. Then there are reports of a spree killing taking place, and all clues point to Telly Ray. Sharlah hasn't seen or spoken to her brother in the eight years that have passed, but she finds it hard to believe that her protective brother has become a mass murderer.
Quincy and Rainie are on the case. Has Telly Ray's hard life led him to become a cold-blooded murderer? What else could possibly be going on? Quincy and Rainie are faced with a case that hits them closer than ever to home.
The only thing preventing me from giving this book 5 stars is that it didn't have that "grab me and never let go" feeling. The book moved in fits and starts for about the first 60 pages; the plot took off at a running start, then slowed, then sped up, then slowed, etc. Finally after 60 pages it seemed to get its groove and took off. Also, one of the bad guys revealed at the end was a little bit of a letdown - not poorly chosen, just anticlimactic. The book was still an enjoyable read, and I give it a solid 4 stars.
From the very beginning my heart broke for Telly and I hoped that what seemed obvious wasn't true. Can there be good in someone with a horrific
When Telly's foster parents are both shot to death, Telly is on the run with numerous law enforcement after him. Have his scars from the past made him into a spree killer?
A really good read from Lisa Gardner.
The orphans were separated, Telly bouncing around foster homes until Frank and Sandra Duvall took him in and tried to get him ready for adulthood. Sharlah fared somewhat better, finally settling in with Pierce Quincy and Rainie, a retired FBI profiler and a retired police officer, respectively. They want to adopt Sharlah and become a true family, which she is OK with.
Their separate lives converged when Telly was filmed shooting out the security camera in a local convenience store, the site of a double murder. When the police arrive at the Duvall’s looking for Telly, they find Frank and Sandra shot dead. Telly is the likely suspect.
The manhunt for Telly involves profilers, trackers, and multiple police agencies. Of course, all is not what it seems. There are secrets that need to be told in order to identify the murderer.
The action starts in chapter one and continues throughout the book. Right Behind You grabs and keeps your attention. Of course, you are pulling for Sharlah and Telly. The twists and turns keep you guessing. And you’ll absolutely fall in love with Luka, Sharlah’s dog, also a retired police officer.
I read Lisa Gardner’s Crash and Burn and Catch Me. I really liked Crash and Burn. As I said in my review of it, “…Gardner weaves a great story and that is what makes you want to keep reading. Readers will immediately take to the characters. They’ll get caught up in their lives. They’ll want to unravel the mystery.” This holds true for Right Behind You as well.
There is a reason Lisa Gardner is a best selling author and Right Behind You is one of the reasons.

My Thoughts:
This is a book that you are either going to love or you're going to hate. There will be no straddling the fence here. The subject of child abuse is never an easy one to read about and more than likely it's probably not the easiest subject to write about.
Lisa Gardner's novels always seem to have a dark theme running through them and I thought that this one was not going to be an exception. However the further I read the more I found this one to be more sad than dark. It's not so much a mystery or a thriller but more of a drama and very character driven. I wished the Conner's had been more than a background filler but the book was very well written and well worth the wait for another Quincey and Rainie novel.
This action-packed thriller keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

A manhunt ensues, with all the usual drama. This is the 7th book featuring Quincy and Conner and, while it works well as a standalone, is sadly forgettable.
At thirteen, Sharlah has finally found her “forever home” and is about to be adopted by retired FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and Rainie Conner. Her soon-to-be parents have even given Sharlah a dog. Sharlah, despite her many problems, loves Luka . . . and she loves knowing that everyone in her soon-to-be-family are experts on monsters.
The calm of their small town is broken with the discovery of two people dead in a gas station convenience store, and a surveillance camera that, before its destruction, recorded the image of the killer.
Telly.
Why, after eight long years, has this young man turned to killing again? And what will happen when Sharlah discovers that her hero brother, the one who saved her life, is hunting for her?
The characters are well-crafted, believable, and superbly developed. Astute readers may accurately predict some of the outcomes of this intricately-woven tale, but the emotional elements of the tale are certain to pull them into the story and some unexpected, clever plot twists will keep those pages turning. With the tension steadily mounting as the suspense builds, readers will find this tale difficult to set aside.
Highly recommended.
When Sharlah finally sees her brother for the first time in eight years, it's because he's gazing into the camera of a convenience story, after killing two people inside. When investigators head over to Telly's foster home they discover dead bodies there, as well. Is Telly a spree killer? Quincy and Rainie work together with law enforcement to try to find and stop Telly, while trying to keep Sharlah in the dark about the murder investigation. The reader knows it's not going to be as straightforward as Quincy and Rainie hope for, especially after they find Telly's cellphone and recent pictures of Sharlah with a target drawn around her head.
This was a very fast moving and interesting book. The main focus is on Telly and Sharlah and, in this case, Quincy and Rainie take more of a backseat in the story's narration. The stories the children tell of their past and how much they cared for each other are incredibly heartbreaking. I listened to the audio narrated by Luke Daniels and Teri Schnaubelt, who did an excellent job. It was nice to see two favorite characters back after almost ten years. I couldn't remember a thing about the main characters, so this is definitely a book that can be read as a standalone novel. The author always does a great job of moving between the various narrators while maintaining the suspense and making the story an intriguing one.

But Telly and Sharlah have not seen each other since the murder. The foster childcare system had decided that. They had been separated.
Sharlah has moved on. She's been in and out of various foster care homes. Nothing felt right until now. She is about to be adopted by retired FBI profiler's Pierce Quincy and his partner Rainie Connor. What Sharlah likes best about her new family is that they are experts on catching monsters.
That might come in handy now. There has been a double murder at a convenience store not far away from their home in Oregon. Not long after that murder, an older couple had been found murdered in their bed. It's a spree killer. Quincy and Rainie offer assistance to the local sheriffs department. The suspect is on the run in some nearby woods. Trackers have been called in. As Quincy and Rainie unravel the evidence in the case, they realize that the suspect on the run is no other than Telly Ray Nash; Sharlah's older brother.
But why is he doing this? It's been eight years since Telly killed his father. What does this mean for Sharlah. The sheriffs office finds pictures of Sharlah with Telly's things-- but there's a bull's-eye on her face. What does this mean? Sharlah knows there is no way Telly is a killer. Her big brother saved her life once. Is he a hero or a zero?
REVIEW
There was so much about this book to love. The story is fast and intense, and you can't stop turning the pages. The characters are so very real. Of course if you know Lisa Gardner, you know Quincy and Rainie, this is her eight novel about these criminal profilers. They are a big hit with her fans. But Telly and Sharlah...you have to love their perseverance. This is their story.
Lisa Gardner is a true master at writing crime thrillers. Her research for this book, on spree killings, trail work, guns, youthful offenders, and childhood trauma, was skillfully used to make Telly and Sharlah's story feel real and authentic. It's psychological suspense at its best, gripping you both intellectually and emotionally.
Right Behind You has so many intricate layers that you can't help but be captivated. It was a intense story of children in foster care and the love and care they may, or may not get. It's the thought-provoking story of what it means to be a family. It the suspenseful story of a spree killing and herculean efforts of a community to catch the murderer. But most of all, it's the gratifying story of the undying love between a brother and his sister.
One of the best crime thrillers of 2017. A must read!
The audio version of this book was narrated by Luke Daniels, Teri Schnaubelt, who both did a fabulous job.
The twists and turns were exciting and logical and kept me guessing to the end. While I think this is the best crime novel I've read for a while, I'm deducting half a star for a few things that made no sense to me:
SPOILERS
How exactly did the overseas bank account details work as a stalemate? Why didn't Sandra's father just move the money to a different account? Why, on his death, was Sandra suddenly able to move the money without exposing herself by proving herself to be the heir to it? How did the various baddies find out so much about Telly and Sharlah and their past?
Some might find it ironic that Sharlah is on the cusp of being adopted by two people involved in law enforcement. After all, eight years ago her older
But when a spree shooter seemingly goes on a rampage, and video footage captures Telly on the scene with a gun. Sharlah must face her past, face her brother, and decide what their future holds.
This book had a lot of suspense. Flashbacks to eight years ago kept me wondering what had truly happened that night and what it meant about Telly and Sharlah. The search for Telly in the present was well-plotted out as well, involving everyone from trackers to profilers, which also kept the suspense up. There was one particular twist near the end that, even though it was small, had me gasping out loud with how well Gardner had tricked me.
I also really liked the relationship between Sharlah and her soon to be adoptive parents Quincy and Rainie. While these are reoccurring characters in a series I had not previously read, I still felt very invested in them and their story.
The ending got a little confusing for me. It felt like Gardner had all these ideas for directions the story could go and put them all in. I appreciated that she wanted to take the idea of a "family drama" and really run with it in a unique direction, but the last third of the book could get hard to follow.
This is a gripping read that will keep you in suspense. I wish the ending was a bit stronger and a bit clearer, but this was still a book I couldn't put down.
Yes, this is a suspense novel but it is more character driven. Thus why it was great that the characters were so engaging. Thus because I enjoyed the characters so much, I had no problems reading this book and staying engaged until the last page. If you are an established fan or a new reader of Lisa Gardner, you will like this book a lot.
But when it appears that Telly has killed again, this time it can't be for her protection, can it? Especially as it is later discovered he's also killed his foster parents.
This story is a lot slower than other Lisa Gardner books. I still enjoyed it, but as the story unravelled I found myself more drawn to the relationships of families involved - the abuse that went on - the secrets and lies. It's lik
e the author has gone from fast-paced FBI police procedural crime novel to a character driven story. Nothing wrong with that, it's just not what I expected.
Rainie and Quincy still make a great couple, the writing style is enjoyable and easy to read. It may be light on the FBI profile and police procedural aspects, but Right Behind You still made for a great read because the characters were so endearing, and quite often physically and emotionally vulnerable.
I'm interested to see what Lisa Gardner's next book (comes out Feb. 19 2019) titled NEVER TELL, is going to be like. It apparently features Detective D.D. Warren joining forces with vigilante Flora Dane to investigate the murder of known associate of Flora's infamous kidnapper.
Right Behind You by Lisa Gardner is an enthralling mystery about a police hunt for a suspected spree killer. Although this latest release is the seventh installment in the Quincy & Rainie series, it can be read as a standalone.
Following the discovery of two murder victims at a local
Eight years earlier, Telly killed his drunk and abusive father during a violent attack in which both Telly and Sharlah feared for their lives. With their mother also dead, Telly and Sharlah became wards of the state and they were sent to live with different foster families. Now, after bouncing from one bad home to another, both Sharlah and Telly are living with good families who care about them. Although she has been unable to verbalize her feelings, Sharlah is happy that Quincy and Rainie are adopting her. Meanwhile, Telly is less than a year away from aging out of the foster system but Frank and Sandra are making progress in preparing him for this next stage of his life. So everyone wants to know: what precipitated Telly's suspected killing spree? And after discovering evidence that he has apparently been stalking Sharlah, what does he plan to do to his sister? There are no clear cut answers to any of the investigators' questions and they are frantic to capture Telly before he kills again.
Initially, Sheriff Atkins and Quincy's suspect that Telly's killing spree has something to do with his and Sharlah's past. However, the deeper they dig into Telly's life with the Duvall's the less certain they are that his troubled childhood has anything to do with the current crimes. A few incongruous details turn the investigation in a completely new direction but Telly remains the focus of their investigation. As the manhunt for Telly continues, will newly discovered information prove he is innocent?
With fiendishly clever twists and turns, Right Behind You is a spellbinding police procedural that fans of the genre are going to absolutely LOVE. The storyline is intriguing with plenty of suspense as the chapters alternate between different perspectives including enlightening chapters from both Telly and Sharlah's points of view. The investigation moves at a fever pitch as Sheriff Atkins and Quincy feverishly follow every new lead while at the same time, the manhunt for Telly adds increased urgency to the storyline. Lisa Gardner brings the novel to a very dramatic and quite shocking conclusion with a plot twist that is impossible to predict. An absolutely outstanding mystery that I highly recommend to old and new fans of the Quincy & Rainie series.
