"The last freelance P.I. on earth, Zach Johnson has been hired to track down a young beauty who happens to be a deadly secret weapon for the World Council. Figuring girls just want to have fun, he follows Natasha to various vacation destinations, but she eludes him, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake. Zach, however, isn't surprised to discover that things aren't what they seem, and to save the world, he's going to have to find a way to team up with the woman he's supposed to destroy"--Publisher's web site.

I always find the Zach Johnson novels to be reliable entertainments, but Zakour might be starting to paint himself into the corner with the concept. For one thing, there is the problem that Zach has been given a challenge (an escaped girl with undisciplined and dangerous mental powers) with serious

enough ethical issues that the whacked-out quality of the farce begins to break down. Also, there is just the small matter of Zach having to deal with the mother of his fiancee, and picking up some new minions, which are matters that really should have been better integrated into the plot. Again, it's all good if you've been following the series to this point, but the time might be coming to wrap it all up.

Zach is back with the usual woman problems. This time it's a vision of flaxen loveliness that only he can see - even HARV and GUS are beginning to suspect he's insane. His future mother-in-law is coming to visit, which is enough to give anyone the heebie-jeebies, after all. But of course, Zach's

not nuts. There is an incredibly powerful psychic on the loose, and it's up to Zach to once again save the world.

The plot isn't quite so shiny this time round - or perhaps I just wasn't quite in the mood. Disturbing revelations don't bode well for the future of the world. Wonder what variety the next deadly damsel will be?

Another great Zachary Nixon Johnson (the last freelance PI on Earth) story. I love this hard-boiled detective series set in the future.

Zachary Nixon Johnson, Earth's last private investigator, is hired to track down a hugely dangerous female superweapon before she can become deadly. Aided by his computer sidekick HARV and a computerized hand weapon, Zach finds himself immediately beset by people who shoot first and ask no

questions later. Set in a dizzying future, told in first person, tough-private-eye style, alleviated by light humor, the story is very enjoyable. Zakour also has a talent for coming up with satisfying wrap-ups in this series. Recommended.
