Emily must continue her journey to master her power as a Stone Keeper and save Alledia from the Elf King. But her challenge grown as she now faces a new enemy in Max, the mysterious young Stone Keeper who has aligned himself with the Elf King. And they have the last of the mother stone and together
Show More
they are creating new allies to destroy all who are in their path. But secrets are revealed...not only about the Elf King, but about the stone itself. And perhaps once more there is hope at defeating the Elf King and restoring balance. But for now Emily and her friends must prepare for battle and hope that they survive.

I've loved the entire series but the story in this one blew me away. Kazu finally answers some of the mysteries that he's been building, such as the voice of the stone and what it really is. But even better than that Kazu continues to build and enrich what we know about the characters lives creating an even more engaging story to pull the reader in. In this book we learn more about Max, the mysterious Stone Keeper from the last volume, and even more about Trellis and the journey that he's on. My one and only regret with this book is that it ended all too quickly.

The artwork in this volume is absolutely phenomenal. Kazu and his team have outdone themselves with this series and in this volume they surpass themselves. Mind you I'm viewing an electronic galley so the final actual print could be even better, but the colors are astounding. They make the book come alive, such as the baren snowy landscape scenes. You would think that these types of scenes would be easy to create, brown/black for the mountain and white for the snow and boom, you're done. But to create truly impressive scenes, such as the ones in this book, you have to build layer upon layer of color, some of which you won't ever really see, but they help create a complete image. And the scenes of Cielis, the floating city, are phenomenal. I could almost believe that I was looking at a photograph instead of an illustration. I can't wait to see what they do in the next book.

This has been one of my favorite series since the first book came out and I eagerly look forward to each new volume. It's an epic journey on par with Jeff Smith's Bone, with captivating characters and fantastic artwork. I can't wait to see where Kazu takes us next in this journey and I eagerly await the next volume in this fantastic series. 5 out of 5 stars.

As always, Kibuishi charms with both his art and story.

PS REVIEW: A MUST purchase for the Amulet series fans. Emily has to work on her Stone Keeper powers as she battles the Elf King to save Alledia. And she has a new enemy, Max. The series builds book by book so readers will probably want to start with the first book in the series to fully understand
Show More
the characters. The artwork is as detailed as the story. Kibuishi continues his layered artwork that at times looks like photographs. The depth in story and artwork that he has created in this series is incredible.

A little disappointed in this book. The other books in the series were so amazing that this was just a really big letdown. I would still recommend it because it's part of an amazing story but this seemed a little bit Robert Jordanesque...meaning a whole book happened, the author collected money for
Show More
the book, I spent time reading the book and yet nothing happened in the book, the plot was no further along. The pages were full and yet when the story ended we were pretty much in the same place as when the book started.

Hoping for so much more in the next book.

Summary: Now that Max has stolen the Mother Stone, the Elf King's power seems nearly unstoppable. The stonekeepers Emily, Vigo, and the elf prince Trellis are bringing the fight to to Elf King, with Emily's brother Navin and their friends providing backup. But they've got the forces of the enemy
Show More
arrayed against them, and the power of the amulets - especially the voice that Emily hears inside her head - may not be as trustworthy as she'd thought.

Review: I don't know with this series, I really don't. I mean, I love the artwork - this volume in particular has a lot of stunning full-page paintings as well as the typical lovely job that Kibuishi does with his panels. I also think the storyline has some cool ideas, and the potential to be really interesting. But something about the way the story is put together just doesn't seem to work for me. In this case, I feel like there was a whole chunk that was missing between the end of Volume 4 and the beginning of this one, a slice of plot that would have been important to see. And then suddenly the amulets are not only evil (which I will admit, I did see coming, so that part at least worked) but can also send people into mystical memory-traveling comas? And the rest of the book was mostly a lot of fight scenes, which I'm usually fairly ambivalent towards. 3 out of 5 stars.

Recommendation: They're fast reading and pretty to look at, but I think I may be out of the target age range of readers who would really get into them. Best for younger / reluctant readers, or adults who want something pretty to look at for half an hour.

In Amulet 5: Prince of the Elves by Kazu Kibuishi starts in the aftermath of Max's betray in The Last Council. This time we get to learn more about the Elf Prince — his history and his current motivations.

Along with learning the Elf Prince's history, there's plenty of backstory on the stones
Show More
themselves. We learn how they work and the dangers of being a stonekeeper. Both are shown through a combination of flashbacks and time travel. The action is fast paced and the plot, satisfyingly complex.

In the early volumes, I wasn't sold on the artwork. The story has always been solid but the artwork left me cold in places. That's changed. This volume is chockful of vibrant and beautiful vistas that both celebrate and enhance the story. As I was reading the egalley, I stopped in a number of places just to show my husband how gorgeous the book is.

I've always been somewhat of a fan of this series simply because of how easy it is to read these, while the art tells a lot of the story. Much like Kibuishi's other work, it is very easy on the eyes with beautiful artwork and simple dialogue.

As I started this book I felt a little bit of that drag from the last book because of its introduction of the "Guardian Council" that simply did not sit well with me. This volume does openly interestingly because it does not focus in on Emily, which many of the previous volumes have done. This
Show More
focuses highly on the newest villain in the series. While we are shown that the group is preparing for "battle" we start to also get some of the layers of other elements to finally unfold. That entire "Guardian Council" fiasco seems to have been diverted in my opinion as this book moves forward in a manner that escalates the story into a new direction that we did not see coming. We discover another villain has been contained within the series since page one and we discover some interesting new facts about the prince of elves that makes him a more likable character in my opinion. This series to date has had a lot of hits and one miss, but this is squarely in the hit section (once you get through the first 1/4 of the book and it moves into the part that is no longer about the Guardian Council). Fans of Amulet will be pleased with this volume as it feels a little more like Kibuishi remembers now what made the first few books so good. They had heart and so does this with enough mystery to make you want to continue reading further.

I hit a wall... It's a fun series, but I feel like I've reached a stopping point.

So we have now filled in the backstories for all of the main characters, maybe.
Art is still fantastic, curious to see how the main story moves forward.
