After losing her mother to suicide, Emily Jewel has spent nine months trying to forget about her dead mother's ghost. She has an excellent foster family, Jim and Laura, but it's not until she sees Mason Killinger that she realizes something might just be missing from her life. She spends her days either on the computer doing schoolwork or volunteering at the local animal shelter. Mason has just finished getting his veterinarian technician degree, and for the first time in his life he's starting a job that has meaning to him. His mother died when he was two, and his father had a tough time dealing with raising two very young boys. Maybe it's because they don't understand him or he just never tried hard enough, but Mason has not meant the girl for him yet. Until he lays eyes upon Emily at the animal shelter he's currently employed at. She's a tough nut to crack, but he's slowly starting to get through the cold shell.
