The victim, Andrea Douglas-Browne, is a beautiful girl from a wealthy family where their political connections keep the case from progressing as well as Erika would like. She doesn't help things by refusing to follow the rules and investigating the case in her own way. The killer is watching Erika from afar, so the reader knows that soon there will be some sort of clash between them.
Erika's backstory is interesting, even though I found her difficult to like. The secondary characters are all well written and the identity of the killer is still a mystery until you get close to the end. I feel like the author has a lot of promise and, because I was always interested in reading the story, I would definitely read the next book in the series.
At times I felt Erika took risks a seasoned investigator might not have, I wondered at her lack of political insight/caring and hoped that all would eventually work out for her. As the first book in a new series there is much to explore in Erika’s past and a future for her that could include any number of wonderful or not so wonderful things. I have a feeling this series has potential.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of this book to read and review.
This is the start of a new series featuring DCI Erika Foster. Erika is stubborn, fierce and damaged. Her pain oozes from the pages. She is also strong and determined and you will find yourself rooting for her every inch of the way. As the story unfolds, it will send chills down your spine. All in all, a great new mystery from Robert Bryndza that will leave you wanting more. And there will be more! Looks like Night Stalker, book two in this series is on it's way!
I want to thank the publisher (Bookouture) and Robert Bryndza for providing me with the ARC through Netgalley for an honest review.
As mysteries go, it was okay. The protagonist is abrasive and impulsive and not very likable, but the inexcusable part is that for a police officer, she makes really
If you are trying to give up smoking, this book is not going to help you. It seems everyone smokes, and it seems we get to read about every smoke break they took. The writing felt stilted, especially in the beginning. I got used to it, so it didn't stand out later in the book as it did initially. Parts of the story, no spoilers here, felt preposterous to me. And the bodies and murders seemed especially grisly for shock value.
This book is adequate for a mystery when you want something quick and easy, but I wasn't impressed with the characters or the crimes.
This is the first in a series that follows Detective Cheif Inspecter (DCI) Ericka Foster, as she takes on her first case in a new place after the murder of her husband and 4 other former colleagues. A woman has been found strangled, under the ice of a local body of water. She happens to be the daughter of a well-known wealthy family and that makes everything much more difficult for DCI Foster, as she tries to make sense of the case and her life without her husband.
This had tons of suspense and mystery, as well as moments you can't help but smile or even laugh at. I recommend reading this if you enjoy a good crime novel or mystery. Definitely going to continue reading this series.
Many thanks to Bookouture and Robert Bryndza for my copy via NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review.

A well-written, fast-paced serial killer thriller. I couldn't put the book down!

From The Book:
Her eyes are wide open. Her lips parted as if to speak. Her dead body frozen in the ice…She is not the only one.
When a young boy discovers the body of a woman beneath a thick sheet of ice in a South London
The victim, a beautiful young socialite, appeared to have the perfect life. Yet when Erika begins to dig deeper, she starts to connect the dots between the murder and the killings of three prostitutes, all found strangled, hands bound and dumped in water around London.
What dark secrets is the girl in the ice hiding?
As Erika inches closer to uncovering the truth, the killer is closing in on Erika.
The last investigation Erika led went badly wrong… resulting in the death of her husband. With her career hanging by a thread, Erika must now battle her own personal demons as well as a killer more deadly than any she’s faced before. But will she get to him before he strikes again?
My Thoughts:
It is an interesting and intriguing beginning of a new series. Erica Foster didn't want the case...she wasn't even ready to return to work..but she found herself as lead in the investigation of a rich and powerful man's daughter. Not only did she need to tread softly with the family...but she found that she was not so popular with some members of the team she has been tasked to lead. Actually the only flaw I found with the book as a whole was the relationship between Erica and her boss, Marsh. He fought Erika and refused to listen to any of her theories at seemingly every turn. It just began to seem unrealistic and stupid on his part. There were loads of potential suspects and a few red herrings for the reader to try and find the killer among that the minor flaw become unimportant as a whole...but it was the reason it lost half star in my opinion. I will certainly pick up the next book in this series. Can't wait to see more of Erika and her team.
I was really impressed with this police procedural crime thriller. I have to say a great police procedural is right up there with the best psychological thrillers for me now. When they are great, wow. I really didn't want to put this book down and I am proud to say I had it right, but
When a wealthy woman is found murdered they bring Detective Erika Foster in to handle the case. Erika is still healing from a loss when out in the field and her boss treats her as if he is doing her a favour. Unfortunately money and power are leading this case, instead of allowing a transparent investigation to occur. Erika is finding similarities to the murder and believes she is dealing with a serial killer but why can't she get a break. Numerous clues but nothing makes sense to come together to break the case.
As Erika gets closer she also puts herself in danger, she escapes once but will she be able to be saved again? This is edge of your seat worthy and you just cannot wait until the murderer or serial killer is found. There are so many twists and turns and it keeps your mind wondering, I really like the fear the murderer put in his victim, shocking once you get to the ending. Again, my venting point I can't discuss. I really like that I keep finding amazing, strong, smart women as Detectives, she wouldn't be stopped as she had integrity and would do what was right even when told no.
This crime thriller/police procedural will keep you fully engaged, the tension is constant and when it all comes together, BAM, I was pleased. I also really enjoyed all the characters, Robert Bryndza gave the characters a genuine place where you felt you understood decisions, good and bad which helped the dialogue to feel real also.
Sometimes reading thrillers they can start to have the same feel but this one was different and I will look out for more by Robert Bryndza. I prefer stand alone's but I definitely look forward to reading more in this series.
Erika Foster is not your normal police detective (who is?). She's been involved several times where those around her were hurt during a case, namely, her husband who died on her last one. A fact that follows Erika to her new post. Of course, there is an A$$hole there who has problems with women cops on his team. And, because of her past, her reputation, while great in getting the job done, has left several people hurt, injured or dead in her past. A fact that did leave her with a precarious resume as to whether, as a woman, she could actually perform her duties.
I just love it when a woman is constantly chastised and criticized because she is a woman by egotistical (for absolutely no reason) man. A man who hates being one upped by a woman and will not even fathom looking at or considering her ideas because she is a woman. Yet the real problem here for this man is because she's smarter, way smarter, than him. Of course, not in his mind. And, always, always, always, that idiot is shown for what he really is just by doing his job "the way he thinks it should be done".
It also seemed to me that management had chosen Erika to be on their team so that they could bully her and ruin her career forever, while looking for a scapegoat in order not to clear this case properly. Erika hit resistance everywhere she went in this book. Suspensions, lies, and unsubstantiated or unreal facts were just part of her everyday life while working in this new job.
Even though there are a lot of sidetracks and wrong turns that the department is making Erika take against her will, she will and does come to the bottom of this thriller.
One that kept me spellbound and had me fist pumping at the end that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Kudos to the author and thanks to Grand Central Publishing and Net Galley for providing me with a

I love DCI Foster, another strong female character in the world of Crime Fiction. All of the characters really popped off the pages and you felt like you knew them. Mixed here and there are snippets of their history and their personal lives which really helped to make you feel for them. I am hopeful that this is only the first in a long series about DCI Foster and her team and that Robert Bryndza writes fast!

This debut novel begins with Detective Erika Foster returning to work, so there is quite a bit of back story to
In some ways it is typical police procedural with plenty of noir thrown in. At one stage Erika crosses her boss who is having strings pulled by some influential people, and she is taken off the case. Erika feels an obligation to the victims she has discovered and continues her investigation unofficially, putting herself in great danger.
When a young rich socialite who has gone missing, is
This story is riveting. There were many suspects that are all plausible that you will be kept guessing. The writing was clear and precise with a thrilling, suspenseful plot. All the characters are well developed as their stories unfold throughout the book. DCI Foster is a strong female lead that I look forward to reading more about. Coming late to the party has its advantages as I can pick up the next book right away. A definite read for those who enjoy police procedurals as well as a well plotted mystery or thriller.
