In two volumes, The Penguin Atlas of World Historyjuxtaposes maps with a detailed and wide-ranging chronological summary of the main cultural, scientific, religious, economic and political events of the period. By working from a global viewpoint, the authors achieve an invaluable perspective on world developments and skilfully clarify complex historical situations. This updated edition of Volume Two, which ranges from the time of the French Revolution to the present, has been revised to include events of recent years, from the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall to the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. There are sections on- The Age of Revolution The Napoleonic Age The Age of Restoration and Revolution The Age of the National States The Age of Imperialism The First and Second World War and Inter-War Period The Post-War Period The Post-1965 Period… (more)

Classic reference works repackaged, these two volumes are indespensable for any historian or reader who wants to know when and where things are going on. The accompanying text is sparse and unadorned, but helpful, perhaps suffering from their "Germanness."

at all. The maps in this are clear and helpful, and the accompanying narrative, while *very* concise (we're talking centuries in a paragraph, at times), is also helpful. The narrative is macro history at its best, enough to give you a general idea of what was going on.

I'd recommend this for any history buff.
