Parmenides, the ancient Greek poet who is known as the father of logical thought, has been a decisive influence in shaping the whole course of Western philosophy and is a crucial figure in determining how we understand the ancient world. But there are some disturbing details in his own poetry, together with occasional remarks made by other ancient writers, that have always cast a long shadow of doubt over the standard view of him as a purely rational thinker. Then, in the 1950s, a series of inscriptions was unearthed at Parmenides' hometown in southern Italy which has thrown a totally new light on the nature and purpose of his philosophy. This is a difficult book for those not well aquainted with mythology and the early Greek philosophers. It hints at hidden, mystical, almost-forgotten understandings and practices of Parmeneides and the Pythagoreans who are at the root of Greek philosophy from which our culture blossomed. Just one

small example deals with how wisdom is received. We are familiar with how many people describe their discoveries as "gifts" from out of the blue. Philosophy was originally a practice of entering a state in which one was receptive to those gifts. It was inevitable that the mystical elements discussed in this book would be pushed aside during the rush towards modern culture, science, technology and law. However their absence accounts for modern man's deep sense of unfulfillment. Not to fear though, these latent truths are still at our disposal if we seek them out.
