An introduction to different ecosystems (woods, meadow, lake/stream, and pond) in each of the 4 seasons. Written for Britain, there are enough similarities to be enjoyable in America (once you figure out some of the alternate names e.g. "lime" for basswood).

from poems, and a conversational approach which encourages exploration of nature. There is also a more scientific explanations and spot illustrations for many species and ecological concepts, e.g. plant life changes with altitude & latitude, animal shelters, pollination, animal dispersion, animal camoflage and temperature control.
My favorite part is the 2-page spreads of artwork with clears colors outlined in black. While it is not detailed enough for plant ID, there is a numbered key to each illustration identifying the birds, insects, animals and plants.
