Description

"The aim of this book is to present the Vikings neither as blood-thirsty ruffians nor as blond, blue-eyed heroes, but to relate their activities to what is known of the material background of their lives. The society which emerges is different from the rest of Europe, and in some ways perhaps more archaic, but it is not one which can reasonably be called primitive, unorganised, or exceptionally cruel." --

This book is old and very out of date, but that's what happens with research material. What it has is quite good, though. Simpson goes into law, politics, marriage, family life, farming, recreation, and more. Our research and understanding of the Vikings has changed since 1967, but it's still a

very fascinating read.

Like any non-fiction book, this one should not be treated as any one true source of information. But what it does give you is a great jumping off point for further research, by giving the reader enough information to know what they should be researching. This book could be especially useful for fantasy and historical fiction writers, given the subject matter.
