Description

Not all people outside the Roman Empire were barbarians. Some, in Persia, India and China had civilizations equal to that of Rome or superior. Even illiterate tribesmen of northern Europe were not utter savages they are sometimes made out to have been. And, though travel took longer in those days than it does now, it was never impossible. An Ethiopian worshipped at Jerusalem; a Greek came within sight of Mount Kilimanjaro; a Chinese visited the mouth of the Persian Gulf and planned a voyage round Arabia; and a Roman artist drew and signed wall-paintings in Chinese Central Asia. --front end flap of book cover.
