Vic Charles became involved in karate in 1973. During the following years he spent his time building up a repertoire of styles and a list of sporting achievements.

following year he won the Coventry Open and the B.K.C.C. Junior Heavyweight Championship.

1975 saw his explosion to the senior ranks; he won the prestigious B.K.C.C. Brittania Cup, the S.E. Open, Wado-Ryu Championship, and the U..K.W. National Championship.

Unfortunately in 1976 Vic was unable to compete due to a broken leg, but returned to Championship winning form the follwing year.

In 1978 he became the all-Styles, Open and Heavyweight Champion in just one evening of cmpetition; A first in the history of English karate. The Openweight title was successfully defended by Vic in 1979 and 1980.

The culmination of Vic's efforts came in 1981, when he became the first karate athlete in England to win the European All-Styles Open Championshiop, and went on later to win the World Games Open-Weight Karate Champioinship.

By 1982 Vic had gained more National and International sporting karate titles than anyone else, qualifying him for entry into the Guiness Book of Records. In the same yar he also received the Commonwealth Sports Award.

Vic's achievements in sporting karate meant he was more than an adequate selection for the televised 'Superteams' and 'Superstars' competitions.

Competing for the firt time in 1982, he was the individual Welsh heat winner. This year he was runner up in the individual heat, a member of the 'fighters' team which was just beaten into second place, and established himself as the British Swimming Superstars Record Holder.
