This book is a practical guide to learning Hap Ki Do: The Korean Martial Art of Self Defense. A textbook with pictures and indept explanations of kicks, techniques, weapons, breathing technique 205 pages full of precise clearly written step by step examples of the Korean Martial Art of Hap ki do.

I wrote this and my previous Hap Ki Do book because there are very few books written about the Korean Martial Art of Hap Ki Do. I also want to share my knowledge of hap Ki Do with my current students, potential students, and martial arts practitioners who want to learn about Hap Ki Do.

Although my goal is to share my knowledge and help develop the versatile art of Hap Ki Do, I feel that it is important to establish that martial arts are not only about the physical skill. In order to be a true martial artist, you must condition your mind as well as your body. The Chinese philosopher, Sun Tzu wrote that a person who knows when to fight and when not to fight, will always win. He also wrote about achieving success through knowing yourself and your enemy. Man's greatest enemy is fear, martial artists, whether they are Hap KI Do stylist or not, must acknowledge their fears and fight to overcome them in order to succeed. This will result in a calm clear mind, and like a clear empty sky you will experience tranquillity and a healthy mind and body. There are many lessons to be learned when dealing with the philosophical aspects of the martial arts. I have studied a variety of arts and read dozens of books about the philosophy and meaning behind the arts. The! more I read, the more I learn about the true secrets such as honor, integrity, kindness, patience, self confidence and many other positive traits. I encourage you to practice your skills and open your minds to the knowledge and great possibilities that await you.-Master Hui Son Choe

This is the book to start with for Hapkido. Master Choe's other book (Hap Ki Do - The Korean Art of Self Defense) focuses mainly on joint locks and takedows and how they can be varied from different grabs. This book however, shows a variety of striking techniques and counters in addition to the joint locks. Also, more realistic situations and the effective techniques are presented here. Although both books are lacking in text they are definitely worth getting as excellent references.

As a beginner in hapkido i would recommend this book for others that are also interested in starting hapkido. This book offers step by step pictures on how to execute kicks and basic self defense, and plus it is very short on words which makes it interesting and easy to learn techniques.

The best book on Hapkido that I have added to my collection.
This book contains excellent photographs of the techniques that allows you to understand how you move from start to the finish. I have been studying Hap Ki Do (and other arts) for over 15 years and in my opinion, this book is one of the best I have read. It is a little lean in demonstrating advanced kicks, but is full of wrist, throwing and weapon techniques.

Excellent Hap Ki Do book. I'm a taekwondo'er and found this book very easy to understand with big clear pictures for illustration. I've purchased all three of Master Choe's HKD books and found a certain amount of redundancy in the techniques, but highly recommend all three any way. I originally found one of these in the library and realized right away that these books were the best I've found. -Jeffrey Borders
