Andrew Conway grew up in Walsall (a town near Birmingham, England), which in the 19th century was famous for the manufacure of whips, though he was completely ingnorant of this fact at the time. After receiving an MA in mathematics from Cambridge University and being struck by a spirit of adventure, Conway moved to Chicago. Here he liked to ride in the very front seat of teh 'L' and learned how to juggle. In the 1980s, he moved to the Silicon Valley in California, where he worked as a computer programmer. Somewhere along the way, he became obsessed with whips and whip cracking.

Conway has taught whip cracking at the leading circus schools in the Unted Kingdom and the Unted States, as well as lecturing at the SanFrancisco Academy of Sciences. He has advised scientists, movie companies, performers, whip makers, and other whip enthusiasts, and his bullwhip FAQ remains one of the most popular whip pages on the Internet.
