Library's review

Self Defense for Today is a book which breaks new ground in a subject which concerns many people in today's society. For a long time, self defence has been seen as an offshoot of the martial arts of the East, such as karate, judo, kung-fu and ju-jutsu. Whilst these systems are often admirable ways

of keeping fit, improving discipline and increasing one's knowledge of fighting methods, they are all based on the idea of fighting back, or continued confrontation between an assailant and a defender. They also encourage the situation of being 'sucked' into a fight. They also require years of study and training before proficiency in fighting is reached.

Most of the general public are not interested in stydying martial arts for years on end. But many members of the public are interested in obtaining a basic idea of defending themselves or of dealing with a potentially violent situation, should one arise. A recent survey-1989 to 1990-carried out by the author, of current books claiming to teach self defence, revealed a host of methods which either do not work or, in order for them to work, needed a lot of training. What most writers on self defence have tried to do is to take the martial arts methods which they have learned from Japanese or Chinese teachers and apply them directly to imaginary self defence situations. These self defence situations simply do not exist. When violence breaks out, it does so, on the move. This book approaches self defence from this point of view.

AVOID-ESCAPE-BREAK FREE-escape and only if all else fails do you need to be able to fight back, as effectively as possible. The author tries to instil in the reader a completely different concept from the confrontation scenario. The whole of one's effort when facing potential violence should be to distance one's self from it, as a first reaction, as a secondary reaction, and as a continued reaction...

Author Pal Crompton, born 1936, has spent most of his life in studying and teaching martial arts, and after much effort has come forward with this new approach to self defence which members of the public can quickly absorb.

If you can run you can defend yourself.
