Wrestling The Making of a Champion-The Takedown

by Bob Douglas

1972

Library's review

A world-championship wrestler and outstanding teacher gives a move-by-move guide to the take-down, the most crucial maneuver in wrestling. The book includes nearly a thousand action sequences-photographs that contrast a black wrestler with a white wrestler against a measured horizontal and vertical

grid designed by the author. These photographs show clearly the relative position of the wrestlers in each move, enabling novice and expert alike to learn the techniques of champions.

Bob Douglas shows beyond a doubt that the key to successful wrestling is a working knowledge of all the components of a takedown-the set-up, the penetration, and finally the second move. Knowing one component is not enough, and until the appearance of this book, too little attention has been paid to the set-up and the second move. Here you will learn all the basic principles common to takedowns; you will be alerted to the countermoves your opponent might make and will be shown how to deal with them.

Through illustrations that are remarkable for their clarity and through Bob's easy-to-follow instructions, the wrestler can learn several set-ups for each takedown and several second moves from each set-up, thus gaining the flexibility to become a champion.

'Bob Douglas has done a maginficent job in explaining and exhibiting takedown techniques. As a former student of mine and coming from a school that is noted for its wrestling, Bob is more than qualified to make this contribution to the wrestling world. I would like to congratulate him and thank him.'-Myron Roderick, Executive Director, United States Wrestling Federation.

'I have observed Bob Douglas at wrestling clinics and, as his coach, during the Olympic competition in 1968. He is an outstanding wrestler and teacher. HIs book is sure to be regarded as the outstanding guide to wrestling. Its use of the sequence camera will make it invaluable to beginning and advanced wrestlers and to wrestling coaches.'-Tommy Evans, Wrestling Coach, The University of Oklahoma.

'Bob Douglas is one of the nation's finest wrestlers and wrestling teachers, and he has written a 'how-to-do-it' book that will become a classic. He describes each maneuver clearly and simply, and the illustrations alone are worth the price of the book.'-Bill Farrell, 1972 Olympic Coach

'Throughout my wrestling career I learned over and over again the importance of the takedown. Bob Duglas has added greatly to my knowledge, and his book will surely help others. He has done a lot for me, for others that he has taught, and, most of all, for the sport itself.'-Carl Adams, 1971 NCAA Champion.

'Without question, Bob Douglas has written one of the finest wrestling books available today. I recommend his book without reservation for junior high, high school, and college wrestlers.'-M. Mildovich, Wrestling Coach, Maple Heights High School.

'Bob has had considerable experience in all styles of wrestling. His book covers a wide range of current techniques and uses illustrations that are better than any I have ever seen.'-Tommy Chesbro, Wrestling Coach, Oklahoma State University.

'In winning an Olympic title, I scored all but two points on takedowns, so I know how important they are in this book Bob gives the finest demonstration available on how to master takedowns.'-Shelby Wilson, Wrestling Coach, The University of Colorado.
