This is the first book by Anton Geesink, the Netherlands Judo expert who has held the championship of his own country twenty-one-times, and the World championship three times-in Paris (1961), in Tokyo (1964, when he also won the Olympic championship), and in Buenos Aires (1965).

his clear and personal style he describes the range of techniques which he has stressed in building up his contest arsenal, from the Tsuri-komi-goshi, or Lifting-pulling-hip-throw, with which he always begins his standing-work trainnig, down to the Sankaku-waza, or Triangle-techniques, which have a central place in his groundwork.

He describes how he has modified the standard tecahnques in contest to adapt them to his temperament, physique, speed and capabilities.

He discusses the throws and holds to which he owes his great successes: Osoto-gari (Major-outer-reaping), thanks to which he came third with the Frenchman Courtine in the early days, at the World Championships in Tokyo in 1956; Sasae-tsurikomi-ashi (LIfting-leg-block), with which he brought the Japanese Sone down into his Mune-gatame hold, to win his first World champoinship; KUchi-mata (Inner Thigh), with which he had defeated the Japanese Koga during the same championship; and finally the 'golden' slip-hold with which he won, after a battle of over nine minutes, against the Japanese Akio Kaminaga to become World and Olympic Champion durning the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964.

In this book Anton Geesink gives the essence of his Judo which has made him a champion many times over and a 7th Dan grade.
