(From the dust jacket)

The ideal weapon for self-defense is a stick. Empty-handed techniques of self-defense take many years of intensive training berore they can be used effectively, and weapons such as guns, and knives are too easily lethal when one's aim is to control rather than to kill an

assailant. However, a stick or some similar object kike an umbrella is quite likely to be near at hand should the necessity arise.

To find a comprehensive system of techniques using the stick, we must turn to the East, for although the West also had many such systems they have now fallen into disuse. In this book, the techniques of Kukishin Ryu-an ancient Japanese method-have been updated and adapted for use today. These techniques are explained by step-by-step instructions, and the 300 photographs in the book allow the trainee to follow and imitate the movements without difficulty. A thorough grounding in the fundamentals dealt with here will enable y0u to disarm and control any assailant.

Masaaki Hatsumi, the present Master of Kukishin Ryu, was aborn in Chiba Prefecture in 1931, and is a graduate of Meiji University, Tokyo. By profession he is a chiropractor and physio-therapist, and he has his practice in Noda City. The turning point in his Budo career came in 1955 when he first met Toshitsugu Takamatsu who introduced him to the classical martial arts. Since then he has studied and practiced many of the ancinet disciplines particularly those assocated with Ninjutsu, in which field he is the leading authority.
