With 23 years in 'line ops' law enforcement, Hock worked as a military police officer around the world, then as a Texas patrolman and as a detective. Following his retirement, he worked as a private investigator specializing in criminal investigations and problem-solving. He made more than 1,300 felony and misdemeanor arrests and received several police commendatons, his last for solving a hit-man murder case and subsequent filing of 12 organized crime cases. Hock investigated and made arrests in hundreds of knife-related assaults and murders. Over the years he extensively researched military edged weapon combat. Combined, this knowledge forms the basis for thie Encyclopedia series.

Hock began his martial arts training in 1973 and has since amassed black belts in Japanese, American and Filipino Martial arts. He was inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 1993. Now the publisher of Close Quarter Combat Magazine, Hock currently tours the world teaching hand, stick, knife and gun fighting, and continues to write books and produce videos on self-defense combatives. With numerous books and more than 40 videos to his credit, Hock has amassed one of the largest and most comprehensive studies of combat techniques available today.
