vulnerability, Hyams focuses on potential violence on the street, on the town, in your car, and at home. For each of these situations, he present efective self-defense tactics.

Discussing hazards on the street, Hyams provides ways for you to avoid being mugged. He tells you how to 'center' yourself so that you do not look like a victim to a would-be assailant. Also revealed are techniques for use against one or more attackers.

Ways of handling aggressive behavior in nightclubs, discos, bars, and restaurants, or even at a party in a friend's home, are outlined in a separate chapter. Hyams presents methods for avoiding as well as discouraging violence, including techniques you can use while seated. He also describes how a couple can function effectively as a team when confronted by aggressors.

When it comes to dangerous situations while driving, Hyams deals with ways to avoid or cope with menacing behavior, as well as what to do if you are forced off the road. You will also learn about the appropriate self-defense tactics to use if you happen to be trapped inside your car.

A section pertaining to self-defense at home is primarily designed for women, although the tactics can be used by men as well. This chapter is concerned with ways a woman can avoid being raped, battered, or otherwise abused

The photographs throughout the book demonstrate proven self-defense techniques that will enable you to handle quickly and safely most common confrontations.

Joe Hyams, author of the widely acclaimed Zen in the Martial Arts, is a black-belt holder who has studied eight martial arts styles since 1952. He has now synthesized his expertise with that of his world famous instructors (who include Ed Parker and the late Bruce Lee) to produce a book of vital interest. He lives in Los Angeles.

'The prupose of this book is to offer you a number of ways to defend yourself when yu must. I will caution repeatedlky that the best self-defense always is avoiding a confrentation. Bkut there are times when aggreassion on your part is desirable, appropriate, and legal.

'Although most of us don't believe we are strong enough to be capable of real self-defense, all we really lack is instruction and experience. The techniques do not require strength; they merely require understanding and practice. They can be used as effectively by women as by men and are simple enough to be learned with only a few hours of practice with a partner. Each technique is illustrated and captioned with simple step-by-step instructions. If you cannot avoid a confrontation, these techniques, used properly, should permit you to disable an assailant sufficiently so that you will have the option of leaving the scene of a confrontation.-Joe Hyams
