Library's review

Henri Joly, the compiler of the list of names and Kakikan of sword fittings makers listed in this book was responsible for the cataloguing of many of the great collections formed at the time Japan was opened up to trade with the West at the end of the 19th century. This gave him an ideal

opportunity to collect examples of the names and, where used, handwritten seals (Kakihan and Kao) of a multitude of metal work artists, many of whom are not recorded in other English language works on the subject.

In this book he records 2,950 names of artists in both Japanese and Romanji. In most cases he adds alternative names of the artists, together with various examples of their handwritten seals. He occasionally adds brief notes of dates, sources, artists' abodes and so forth. The scholar or collector of metalwork has plenty of space to make his own additions to the list as the left-hand pages have been left blank for this purpose.
