An informal, conversational look at practical Judo, primarily in looking at the standard, or traditional, ways that some techniques are taught, but which seem to have no connection with the reality of a resisting opponent. Lubbert talks about his own attempts to overcome the

frustrations of how Judo is taught, vs how Judo is done, and offers his own practical observations. The writing style is interesting and engaging because of its intimate conversational nature.

This book is yet another look into the techniques of Judo. It is discriptive and easy to understand, even for the novice Judoka. I know Hal and he is a brilliant instructor as well as a excellent fighter. I highly recommend this book.

I just bought the book from the Olympic Training Center (library, I guess). The reviewer who said 'brilliant' is right. Clear, concise, and easy to understand. I'm just starting judo, but as a teacher of 32 years experience who nows textbooks intimately, I know a good book and teacher when I see one.
