People who practise martial arts or sports tend to put too much emphasis on physical training and competition. It is good to train the body, however, training the body does not necessarily make the mind strong. There are good sportsmen who commit crimes and big strong men who cannot

work in the world because of their weak mind.

The mind has its principles and the body has its own principles. One can attain a healthy mind and body by understanding these two principles. The mind moves the body, lso one must first learn the principles of the mind and practise them. Naturally one must know the principles of the body so that the training will be for the mind and the body. This is the practise of the unification of mind and body which Shin-Shin Toitsu Aikido is based upon.

We see only a small segment of an iceberg which is above the surface of the water. There is a much bigger part under the water which we cannot see. Similarly most people think that physical power is the only power. They forget the power of the mind which cannot be seen. One's real power is the unification of minid and body.

People say that this is a world where we must struggle each day to be better than others. It is good to be stronger and better than others but this world is not only relative, there is a world above competition. Even if one can win over others, if one cannot win over himself, it is of no use. By cultivating too much competitive spirit, one may collide with others or fight in the family.

In Shin-Shin Toitsu Aikido, we practise how to use our mind and body to win over ourselves, not to win over others. That is the spirit of non-fighting and winning without fighting.

Koretoshi Maruyama was born on October 5th 1936 in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. After graduating Keio Gijuku University in 1959, he entered Maruyama Kogyo, a family enterprise.

He had practised Judo since the age of 13 but joined the Aikido club, at the age of 21, while in Keio Gijuku University. He met Master Koichi Tohei there and learned the principles of Ki and Aikido, which became his way of Life. After graduation he continued to study Aikido. In 1967 he turned the family enterprise over to his younger brother and entered Ki No Kenkyukai.

Since then he has been practising an teaching Ki and Aikido. He has taught Ki and Shin-Shin Toitsu Aikido in Hawaii, USA, Europe and other parts of the world on his yearly lectures.

He is now the executive director of Ki No Kenkyukai, Chief lecturer of Shin-Shin Toitsu Do (Unification of Mind and Boly), Chief Instructor of the Kiatsu School, Guest Lecturer at the University of Hawaii, and Instructor at the Keio Gijuku University.
