Library's review

Four high-ranking Japanese Judoka and a top American coach have worked together in this thoroughly illustrated book to take you through the basic techniques of Judo, 'the gentle art.' Starting with the history of Judo as a sport, the traditional uniform and the significance of the different colored

belts, the book then prepares you for Judo with well-thought-out conditioning execises. You need flexibility, control, co-ordination and knowledge of how to apply your strength to be effective against any opponent. In learning the exercises, you will start to master the techniques of the sport.

Then as you progress through the picture-laden pages you will see how you get your opponent off-balance, when are both standing, how you get him in a hold, how you escape from a hold, how you defend yourself when you are thrown to the mat. You will learn exactly how to place your body in relation to your opponent, how to use your hands, feet and torso. There is no mystery in Judo-a small man can throw a big man simply by knowing how.

One unique feature of this book is that where necessary in each photograph (all have been taken from motion picture film) the opponent is dentified with an 'O' so that as the position shifts you are not confused.

The authors give the rules for scoring a Judo match as well as a translation of the Japanese terminology of each technique. You will experience many a thrill when you can tell and show your friends what the hiza-guruma, the o-soto-gari and a hundred other Judo moves are!
