Library's review

from preface

In 1943 the Library of Congress issued the first widely corculated bibliography of the martial arts. Its compiler listed only 161 entries having to do with judo, jujitsu, and hand-to-hand fighting. Many of the texts cited were not in English. Still, Helen D. Jone's pamphlet (item 24) is

perhaps the only bibliography ever having a claim on the adjective 'comprehensive': it did in fact list nearly everything in print in English at the time. There was, furthermore, such a small amount of information available on the Oriental fighting arts (because of the intrinsic secrecy surrounding the teaching, because of the West's great physical and psychological distance from the east, and because of the state of world hostilities at teh time) that the subject could fairly and accurately be treated in just a few pages. In any event, the Ennglish-speaking world of 1943 knwe only a handful of eccentrics who took the subject seriously.
