Library's review

Taira Shinken was born on the island of Kume in 1897. There are several possibilities as to where he bagan his kobudo training but the instructor credited with teaching Taira Shinken the most as Yabiku Moden who was considered to be the most knowledgeable kobudo master on mainland Japan in 1929.

Eventually he attained a shihan menkyo (a teacher's certificate) from him.

It should be noted that he also trained for seven years directly under the tutelage of Gichen Funakoshi who instilled a high level of basics. In 1934 Taira asked his karate Sensei to introduce him to Kenwa Mabuni with whom Taira also trained.

It is Master Taira who is credited with saving literally dozens of neglected traditions in kobudo and if any one person can be credited with the saving of Okinawa's kobudo from antiquity it would undoubtedly be Taira Shinken.

In 1955 he established the Ryokyu Kobudo Hozon Shinko Kai which was the first Okinawan weapons organization. Then in 1963 he formed the Kokusai Karate Kobudo Renmei (International Karate and Kobudo Association).

His more famous students include Sakagami Ryusho, Tatsuo and Eizo Shimabuku, and Akamine Eisuke. Perhaps the greatest compliment one could pay to this legend of a man is one which historian Patrick McCarthy did when he called him the 'Funakoshi of Kobudo.'
