recommendations of noted Broadway and Hollywood personalities who have afforded themselves the opportunity for exercise, relaxation and sound training.

A graduate of the University of Berlin, from which he received a degree in phyiscal education, Mr. Sigward has served as the physical director for the Standard Oil Company in Hamburg, Germany, and athletics and recreation director on board the luxury yacht 'S.S. Orion.'

Since coming to New York, he has taught jiu-jitsu and self defense tactics at the YMCA, YMHA, Horace Mann School for Boys, Bergen Junior College, Maplewood Adult School, Boy Scouts of America and at Camps Androscoggin and Moosilauke.

During World War II, Mr. sigward was assigned by the Army Air Corps Millitary Police to supervise instruction in self defense to both military and civilian personnel in such widely separated places as camp Upton, New York; Fort Dupont, Delaware; Brookleyfield, Alabama; Brookhaven Police Department, New York; and the Townsville Police Department in Australia.

For twenty-four consecutive months Mr. Sigward presented the practical applications of the theory as well as the tactics of modern self defense in a series of articles published in Law and Order, a national magazine for police and all those concerned with the law enforcement profession. This volume, containing all of these articles as well as additional material previously unpublished, has been prepared in response to popular demand.

Dear Reader:

You will find Modern Self Defense to be not a book so much as a study manual prepared in handy textbook style. And that is how it should be used-studied, worked, practiced!

Written primarily for police officers, and dealing with the grim and always seriously dangeroius business of self defense, this book could not possibly be dainty. Its capable author, R.H. Sigward, wastes neither words nor sympathy on the assailant-the mugger, knifer, or perhaps the would-be murderer. His purpose is to help you get out of danger and stop the attack. This in no gentle sport, but self-preservation, probably survival itself. Expect no soft words!

Every moment you spend with Modern Self Defense will drive home the lessons of alertness, purposefulness, plan and recovery. To the earnest police officer, we say 'learn these lessons well, and live.' That is why we presented this material in Law and Order, the monthly magazine; and now of demand-necessity have reprinted Modern Self Defense as a book. We owed this service to the policemen Law and Order serves!

Printed under the 'On The Beat' seal-which marks all our 'in service training' articles-this becomes the first Law and Order textbook. Our plans to serve you and fellow police or others in the profession of law and order preservation are ambitious. Our second book in the 'On The Beat' series will be Bruce Holmgren's basic study, 'Primary Police Functions.' Our third will be the enlightening work of Richard O. Arther and Rudolph R. Caputo, 'Interrogation For Investigators.' These are proven series articles, pre-tested and well received in Law and Order.

Thank you for your interest. I am sure you will find that Mr. Sigward's teachings in picture form will improve your self confidence, and skill in self defense. -William C. Copp, Publisher
