A Study of Taijiquan

by Lutang Sun

2003

Description

This extensively illustrated primer is the first English edition of Sun's classic 1919 book which explores both the theory and practice of the style, with emphasis on movements and postures. Tim Cartmell's translation provides both a standard by which practitioners can judge themselves and valuable information relevant to all versions of taijiquan. Tim Cartmell has done the American Taijiquan community a great service translating Sun Lutang's books into English.

today can be traced directly to A Study of Taijiquan. It was the first book ever published on the art of Taijiquan and the first instructional manual with pictures and detailed explanations of the movements of the form.

This is the first publication of Sun's seminal work in English. It includes an annotated translation of the complete original text, photographs of Sun Lutang demonstrating the form, and an explanation of the paired-practice combat method of 'striking hands.'

The Sun style is one of the five orthodox styles of Taijiquan. It is unique because it combines the best of the three Inernal styles-Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, and Baguazhang-into one coherent form. A master of all three styles, Sun Lutang considered his Taijiquan form to be the crowning achievement of his illustrious martial career.

Practitioners of Taijiquan, especially those with an interest in Internal forms, will find Sun Lutang's A Study of Taijiquan to be a most valuable resource and a rare look at the methods and movements of an original style as expained by the founder himself.
