Library's review

Ms. Shing Yenling (Xing Yanling) was born in Shantung Province, in the Province, in the People's Republic of China. In 1977, she entered the Fujian (Fukien) Teachers' University and began training in Taijiquan (t'ai-chi ch'uan), taijijian (tai-chi swordplay), whip and staff techniques, and other

southern and northern style Chinese martial arts.

In 1980, she joined the physical education staff at the Fujian Medical college and began to teach Chinese martial arts to the students at the school. At this time, she also began studying bagauzang (bagua-zang), xingyiquan (shing-iee-ch'uan), piguanquan (pigua-ch'uan), liugedaqiang (liu-fu-da-chi'ang: long spear), fanziquan (fan-zi ch'uan) and jiujiebian (ju-jie bi'en: whip) in a special six-month seminar held at the Wuhan Institute of Physical Education, during which time she trained eight hours a day.

Ms. Shing moved to Tokyo, Japan, in 1988, where she began studying the Japanese language and teaching t'ai-chi ch'uan. She was invited to the U.S.A. in 1989 by Mr. Morio Higaonna to perform a Chinese martial art demonstraition at the Miyagi Chojun Memorial Martial Arts Festival in San Diego, California. She entered Tokyo Gakugei University, graduate course, for studying a physical education in Japan.

Fair book with good written directions to go with the typical sequential pictures. As with any martial art, unless you have studied for a while (more than two years) and have mastered one art, trying to learn from a book is not a good idea. I have studied Tang So Do for over 20 years, Tomiki Aikido for over 15, and Yang Style for 20 years as well. It takes time to learn from the book, but it can be done....the written directions take patience. There are many interpretations of Chen style (just as there are with most of the Tai Chi styles), so finding a video on YouTube takes some time. Between a video, the pictures in the book and the written discription, you can learn with this book.-Charles Stoy

It's hard to find books on the Chen style. This one is well written and covers as much as you can expect in a book.

(As I understand it) This book deals with chen forms used in competition. I must say it is quite different from the ch'en style I am learning. Same characteristic silk reeling energy, but in a different, less interesting form.
