Qigong is a unique health-promoting system created by the Chinese people to adjust them to the social, historical and cultural environments in which they live. What makes qigong different from other systems of physical training is the use of the mind to regulate the performance of the various organs in the body, to bring about harmony between the mind and the body, and to promote general health and longevity.

A native of Huaihua County, Hunan Province, Yang Qiyuan was born in December 1962 and graduated from the Shanghai Physical Culture Institute with a B.A. degree in education.

(martial arts) when he was a boy. Later after learning boxing techniques from Professor Zhang Lide, the great master of Northern Chinese Boxing, he went on to pioneer the intergration of tradiional qigong and Chinese boxing. Since 1980 he has been working on the popularization and study of qigoing and, for over the past decade, he as helped to cultivate a good number of qigong, wushu and Chinese boxing masters. Furthermore, he has achieved great success in the areas of medical qigong and health care. He is presently a research fellow in the Qigong Research Department of the Chinese Wushu Administration Center, where he is in charge of qigong and wushu research, as well as systematization and administration. His writing incudes The General Physical Culture, Essentials of the Best Chinese Boxing Techniques, and other books.
