The Art of Karate is a unique book that for the first time presents karate pictorially-as a genuine art form rather than merely as a means of self-defense or as a contact sport.

There is much more to karate than the violence movies or television usually

present-as millions of people throughout the world who participate in karate already know. There are many books on the subject that are simply instructional and feature only rudimentary photography. This book combines the very necessary instructional element with a sensitive and spiritual attitude that many will liken to a photo series on ballet or sculpture.

This book was coordinated by the internationally acknowledged Master Takayuki Kubota. He is currently President of the International Karate Association which mantains 100 dojos, or schools, around the world. To accompany the photographs, Shihan (Master) Kubota has written a minimal yet precise text that will appeal not only to the knowledgeable aficionado, but will prove meaningful to those whose interest has until now been merely peripheral. He has also written an important introduction and provided the reader with excellent appendices. Each photo is accompanied by Japanese calligraphy and a direct English translation. Each photograph was shot exclusively for this book.

As beautiful as the pictures are, so is the text which is composed of ancient precepts that provide the spiritual foundation for modern karate. They are presented to remind the reader that karate is a wise and graceful example of man's constant search for self-understanding.

Tak Kubota is an 8th Dan Master of Karate and perhaps one of three people in the world to wear a red belt-the ultimate recognition of karate ability. He has been cited several times by such organizatins as te F.B.I. and the Los Angeles Police Department for his assistance in training their officers in defensive tactics. He has also served as the chief bodyguard of the U.S. Ambassador to Japan. He commands great respect worldwide for his leadership in the karate movement. Not only has he supervised the creation of this book, but he also appears on the cover and in many of the photographs.

Mark Miller has provided photographic expertise to a broad range of editorial and advertising projects, including illustrated articles for such publications as Time magazine. His extensive color slide stock file is utilized by many adverising agencies and magazines. In the last three years, Mark has added thirty-two color magazines covers to his credit.

He and his family live in Corona del Mar, California.
