acupuncture and herbal medicine; and Andrew Lum, master of Tai Chi Chuan and the Tao style. Although each teaches independently, all share basic philosophical truths that offer guidance in attaining personal harmony in the turbulent contemporary world. Ira Lerner's photographs and commentary interpret both objective and subjective aspects of the masters' practice of "the Way."

Aikido-"the Way of Spiritual Harmony"-is one of the martial arts, although its purpose is peaceful, not agressive. Chi Kung concerns the control of chi, or life force, the current of energy that acupuncturists stimulate through needles to achieve a profound mastery of the body. Tai Chi, a "soft" form, and the Tao style, a "hard form," also are martial arts. Andrew Lum is master of both, although, like Yamamoto Sensei and Dr. Siou, he is interested in applying the discipline of his art first to himself and then to the peaceful organization of his environment.

Diary of the Way is involved with, but does not stress, the martial elements of the martial arts. It is respectful of the power implicit in the arts, but its emphasis is on "the way," and on refinement of teh sensibilities enabling the seeker to follow "the Way." Keeping power under leash is more important than using it to subjugate others.

The book is by no means passive. The pictures and accompanying text are concerned with violence and with respoinses to violence, but in a self-discipined manner that does not divert from pursuit of "the Way."

Ira Lerner is a photographer who has earned great reconnition for his sensitive and penetrating images. His work has appeared in National Geographic, Vogue, Mademoiselle, and many other national publications. He has studied both the philosophy and techniques of various Oriental arts for more than ten years, during which time he also studied with Yukiso Yamamoto. His knowledge of and devotion to the Oriental arts blend with his photographic skill to produce this extraordinary volume.
