Stevens identifies seven levels of prayer:
1) Kill my enemies
2) Please don’t punish me
3) Gimme, gimme, gimme
4) Give me Strength
5) Life is wonderful. Thank you.
6) Thy will be done
7) You and I are One.

The first part of the book he is explaining those levels. To him, the first levels are immature,

and as we grow more spiritually mature, we move up the ladder. I am not sure it is all that clear cut, (nor is he, to be fair) but still, this is a helpful paradigm.

The second part of the book is composed of actual prayers. I have never been a real fan or written prayers, and his are too long to be used for focused meditation, but for some people they may be very helpful.

While Stevens does not reject the Christian tradition, he is clearly not a part of mainstream Christianity. I say this, not as a criticism, but to let people know where he stands. If you are looking for a standard Christian work on prayer, this is not the book for you. But if you want your prayer to get a real jolt, no matter what your tradition, you might find this book to be charged just about right.
