with basements have radon detectors and all new homes be plumbed to air out the sub-basement, venitng radon gas into the atmosphere rather than allowing it to raise into the house...
a gas & hazard that was unknown before we started detonating nuclear bombs in the Utah/Nevada cave-ridden seafloor (yes, it used to be a sea).
