Description

Christian Nonfiction. Religion & Spirituality. Nonfiction. Many believers feel stunted in their Christian growth. We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. In this newly repackaged edition-now with full appendix, study questions, and the author's own epilogue, "Ragamuffin Ten Years Later," Brennan Manning reminds us that nothing could be further from the truth. The Father beckons us to Himself with a "furious love" that burns brightly and constantly. Only when we truly embrace God's grace can we bask in the joy of a gospel that enfolds the most needy of His flock-the "ragamuffins.".

The Ragamuffin Gospel is an insightful read, especially if you were raised in a Christian church. It helps you begin to understand the depth of God's grace and love, and frees you from the list of "dos" and "dont's" to which so many Christians enslave themselves. Not that morality is in any way
Show More
wrong, but adhering to a predetermined legalistic moral code can easily stunt the growth of a Christian's love-relationship with God.

If you were not raised in the Church, it is still a good read, but not as impacting as it would be for someone who knew only rules first, then God's love. For someone who has wandered in the wilderness and has encountered God within the midst of their heartache, this book has somewhat of a "Well, DUH!" factor. Rules and legalism don't matter as much to someone who has had her life turned on its head by God.

The book is also somewhat dated. The movies and TV shows mentioned were popular before my awareness of pop-culture developed. However, the points are well-made and can be understood even without knowing the exact film being referenced.

This is truly an excellent read, especially if you are struggling with the conflict of legalism verses grace. Excellent for anyone who has ever been "turned off" by a Christian church.

incredible, down to earth, look At authentic Christianity. Very honest and not pious.

This book is a therapeutic reminder of God's incomprehensible grace. Brennan Manning shares how salvation is not something we work for or have to "please God" to keep, but rather a free act of love by God to mankind.

Classic work by Brennan Manning written for the marginalized population.

This book was formative for my spiritual life. A must-read for any Christian who's getting weary with the seemingly endless rules of the faith, or for any wondering what Christianity and grace are really all about.

The Ragamuffin Gospel opened my eyes. I no longer have to pretend to have it together before, because I now realize that God is looking for people who don't have it together. I feel like my words about the book cannot do it justice, because explaining grace always underestimates it. You must

experience it for yourself.

Includes an introduction by Rich Mullins. Theme: All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. And to all God extends and offers up grace, forgivness and the love of father to a prodigal son.

Quite simply, the BEST book ever written about living the simple Christian life. It is brutally honest, humble and filled with love and grace. Applicable to Christians of all denominations.

Ragamuffin revolution!! I've read the book several times but this is the first time I've gotten and listened to the audiobook. Highly recommend sitting back and listening to Manning's G_d-filled words wash over you.. a shower of grace.

I read this book many years ago. It gave me hope that God had not counted me out, even though I had been a disobedient, prodigal son.

"The ragamuffin who sees his life as a voyage of discovery and runs the risk of failure has a better feel for faithfulness than the timid man who hides behind the law and never finds out who he is at all."

A great reminder of what our faith is really all about. And what it is not about. To many people running around trying to be good when they should be trying to know Christ. And God loves us anyway.

Fantastic is all I can say. Cuts to the heart. Restores the Good News for what it is. Ignore Manning's occasional pluralist slip.

I had read this book back in the early 1990's when it first was published. I sped read it though back then, but this book is to be slowly chewed and digested so it can get into a person's spirit. It has the ability to change twisted thinking about God and addresses why He did what He did to save

mankind. I was in a legalistic church for many years that preached and taught "holy" living. I always believed I never could measure up to God to be able to please Him with who I am or what I do or don't do, because I was always "screwing up". Always having a sense God was watching and waiting for me to mess up and not live the Christian life like I should. This book written by a man who was tormented by these feelings for years, knows what he is talking about. It is refreshing, a book to definitely keep in one's library to reference just in case these thoughts and feelings try to worm their way back in. I would definitely recommend this book for those who struggle to embrace God's love, mercy and grace for them.

Apparently this book was first published in 1990 and is now considered a classic, but I had never previously heard of Brennan Manning. I started to read the book because I was given it... and continued because I was so impressed by the writing, and encouraged by the content.

The book is, as the
Show More
final chapter says, 'unbalanced'. It focuses on God's unconditional love for mankind, and the saving power of Jesus. It tries to help Christians to understand what they mean when they use the oft-quoted phrase about 'saved by grace'. It points out that we're all 'ragamuffins' - he deliberately doesn't use the word 'sinners', perhaps because that flows all too easily off the tongue. Instead, the picture of a ragamuffin is used throughout. Someone like Oliver Twist, perhaps: with nothing of beauty, no reason for anyone to care for us, nothing in ourselves that merits attention. Yet God loves us anyway, with the deep and passionate love of a father. We don't have to do anything to merit his grace. As Philip Yancey says in his book on the same subject: there's nothing we can do that will make God love us more, and nothing we can do that will make God love us less.

Does that mean we can do whatever we like, that our lifestyle doesn't matter? Of course not. Manning doesn't focus on our response, or Christian living, but there are many books which do. Of course God has standards, and we're called to holiness. But we don't have to strive for it, or struggle in our own strength. We accept God's love, take hold of his hand, and then find ourselves motivated to follow his commands and guidance. Will we ever succeed? Of course not, but every little step in the right direction is worth taking.

All in all, I thought this an excellent book. Well-written with an interesting style, including relevant anecdotes now and again, and often inspiring. There weren't any brand new insights, to be sure, but for those struggling with the concept of works vs grace, or caught up in legalistic forms of Christianity, I recommend it most highly.

Re-read 2012; I found it inspiring and encouraging all over again. Definitely recommended.

Since its original 1990 publication, The Ragamuffin Gospel inspired at least a dozen songs. The late Rich Mullions formed the Ragamuffin Band. Several books, poems, and paintings, and even a few bookstores carry the ragamuffin tag. The twenty-fifth-anniversary edition of Brennan Manning’s classic

meditation on grace, The Ragamuffin Gospel: Good News for the Bedraggled, Beat-Up, and Burnt Out, is now available as an e-book. I took the chance to read it for the first time. English evangelical books weren't on my to-read shelf in the 1990s.

The gospel of God's grace for mankind is the key concept in this book, loaded with quotes and stories. The ragamuffins are the poor in spirit who, aware of their inner poverty and emptiness, threw themselves without hesitation on the mercy of God. They come undone, as they are. Manning would like to see us all becoming ragamuffins. These Christians do not complain about the feeble preaching and the lifeless worship of their local church. They are happy to have a place to go where they can mingle with other beggars at the door of God's mercy. Long prayers and big words do not suit ragamuffins. Ragamuffins know that they are the tax collectors and that refusing to admit would make them Pharisees.

Manning uses many examples from the gospels, Jesus' parables, authors like Bonhoeffer, Merton, C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, Dostoyevsky, and Henri Nouwen. Devotionals are added to the main part of the book to help you along your spiritual journey.

I was deeply challenged and blessed by Manning's words. We too easily replace the love and compassion of God with religious ideas and practices that lack the power to transform our lives. Manning challenges these ideas and offers a path for all of us to follow to the heart of God.
