In this film adaption of Kate DiCamillo’s award-winning children’s book of the same name, Opal is trying to adjust to her new town in Florida. With a preacher father and a missing mother, Opal is looking for some friendship when she discovers a scruffy, homeless dog in the supermarket. Naming

him Winn-Dixie (after the supermarket, of course), the pair embark on a memorable summer together. With a warm storyline and gentle soundtrack, youngsters will love the animal-human bonding and mischievous adventures. At turns sad, sweet, and cute, Because of Winn-Dixie is ideal for family movie night or for educational viewing (using DiCamillo’s novel to compare and contrast). Recommended. For ages 7-14.

Substance: Feel-good story about grade-school girl who makes friends because of "adopting" a lovable mutt. Suitable for 9-12 year olds but not other ages. Good production, but superficial story-line.
