The message of hope and depiction of how the choices you make can change your life ring true and will remain with you once the book has been closed.”—Bookreporter Acclaim for Dean Koontz   “Perhaps more than any other author, Koontz writes fiction perfectly suited to the mood of America: novels that acknowledge the reality and tenacity of evil but also the power of good . . . that entertain vastly as they uplift.”—Publishers Weekly “A rarity among bestselling writers, Koontz continues to pursue new ways of telling stories, never content with repeating himself.”—Chicago Sun-Times   “Tumbling, hallucinogenic prose. ‘Serious’ writers . . . might do well to examine his technique.”—The New York Times Book Review   “[Koontz] has always had near-Dickensian powers of description, and an ability to yank us from one page to the next that few novelists can match.”—Los Angeles Times   “Koontz is a superb plotter and wordsmith. He chronicles the hopes and fears of our time in broad strokes and fine detail, using popular fiction to explore the human condition.”—USA Today   “Characters and the search for meaning, exquisitely crafted, are the soul of [Koontz’s] work. . . . One of the master storytellers of this or any age.”—The Tampa Tribune   “A literary juggler.”—The Times (London).… (more)

The City is tedious--painful to stick with because there were so many details in the musicians and songs that were distracting. That's the story line of the book, a child music prodigy harassed by some really angry adults. When the plot finally started to coalesce, it got mildly interesting. The

plot was tepid, the pace slow--it came across as a history slash music slash art lesson. It was written as a flashback by a 50 year old adult, about his 9-10 year old years. The nine year old solves a peculiarly strange murder/robbery and I thought that was a bit over the top. Nevertheless, I continued to the end, looking for the excitement that usually accompanies a smash conclusion and it wasn't there.

Very engaging story of a the events in a young musical prodigy's life when he was 9 to 10 years old.

Also includes the short story, "The Neighbor" -a prequel to "The City."

It is rare that upon finishing a book that the thought flows through my mind that "I'd like to read this book again during the years to come." There are many pearls of wisdom within the threads of the story that I found to be

very meaningful.
