The anti-hero in this story, didn't have a lot going for him, except doing an unusual favour for a millionaire and his wife, in return for an astronomical sum of money. After coming out of a five year prison term, he was fighting a crooked detective and public disfavour. Halfway through the story,
Show More
I kept thinking, how is he going to get out of his predicament?
I found the story rather weak and implausible, but it was still a rapid pageturner. I just had to finish it.

A bit of a Let Down.

I have read many of Sandra Brown's books and overall I would say that I have enjoyed most of them. I was a bit disappointed in Play Dirty and don't think it was one of her better stories. In Play Dirty I was always looking for what Sandra is known for; great descriptions of
Show More
the character traits; superb plot development and a terrific ending. In my opinion these characteristics of Sandra were missing. I never really got the relationship Griff and Laura and Foster Speakman. This is an easy read and a relaxing read and even though I was a bit disappointed I'll probably check out her next book.

Just released from prison after 5 years for gambling and throwing a football game, former NFL quarterback, Griff Burkett, is in need of a job. When he is approached by the CEO of SunSouth airlines, Foster Speakman, and his wife, Laura, to father a child for them, he is sceptical, but the promise of
Show More
millions of dollars makes it hard to resist. What Griff doesn't bargain for is that he is falling in love with Laura. On top of that, Dallas homicide detective Stanley Rodarte still believes that Griff murdered his former bookie and is out to prove itā€¦no matter what. Brown delivers another great story full of action and suspense with a twist at the end that I didn't see coming.

The book had an unusual premise and I had to give it a try. As the book begins Griff Birkett is an ex-con just out of prison on parole and looking for work. He was a star pro football quarterback when he was caught gambling and throwing games for millions of dollars and sent to prison for 5 years

in disgrace. I can't remember a book where the hero was such a thoroughly unlikeable character. Foster Speakman, a wealthy businessman, invites Griff to his home to offer him a job. Foster is a paraplegic and in a wheel chair. His beautiful wife, Laura, loves him and is devoted to him. But Foster wants an heir and he feels nothing from the waist down and cannot impregnate Laura. And he refuses to use artificial insemination. He wants Laura to conceive and deliver a baby in the natural way and has finally convinced her to do just that with a surrogate. He offers Griff 100 thousand dollars to impregnate Laura with an additional 500 thousand when the baby is born and then a million a year after that. Griff is reluctant at first and he can see that Laura is reluctant but determined to go along with her husband's wishes so he finally agrees. This is a suspense novel not technically a romance, but a romance sub-plot is there. I was completely shocked near the end when the villain was finally revealed and it really took me by surprise. Griff's complete story was eventually revealed and he manages to redeem himself a little and I kinda liked him at the end. He turned his life around and started to repair the damage he had done to the people in his life. The action kept me on edge and turning the pages late at night. The ending along with a couple of love scenes are satisfying enough for most romance readers to enjoy.
My grade: B+

One of my favorite PULP writers. Once again, she creates a page turner filled with murder, greed and sex. Pure entertainment, nothing more or less.

A interesting and satisfying read.

Just about all of Sandra Brown's novels I have enjoyed and although I didn't think that this was one of her best effort, I still enjoyed the story. The love story that centered on Griff and Laura was a bit weak, and the characters could have been flushed out

more, but overall the story held my interest.

Awesome use of back story. So well constructed from a writer's point of view. I learned a lot with this book.

I really looked forward to reading this book. It combined one of my favorite authors (Sandra Brown with my favorite sport (football).

This book had a rocky start for me. I had a hard time liking the hero, a star quarterback that throws a game to pay off gambling debts. That just didn't make him
Show More
great hero material for me. There is a twist at the end that redeems him, though. I wish it would have been revealed sooner.

The heroine was somewhat hard to love in the beginning also, but again by the end she'd redeemed herself.

I stopped and started this book several times. Read a few books inbetween, then because I was flat on my back with a back problem, I pulled it back out. Once I got to the middle of the book, I was hooked, and finished it in one day. Usually, I'm hooked on Sandra Brown's books by the first chapter.

All in all, I do recommend the book. I think it's a great read with atypical plot twists and characters.

There was so much going on I don't know where to begin. This is my first Sandra Brown book and I LOVED it!

home but his lawyer, and being followed by a detective with a vengeance.

Foster, a wealthy business owner, and his wife and business partner, Laura, are desperate for a child but Foster can't father the child. They need a sperm donor with attributes as close as possible to Foster's.

Detective Rodarte has had it in for Griff since the day Griff was arrested for murder. He couldn't get it to stick 5 years ago so he is trying his best to make it stick now. He believes he has finally found a way to get rid of Griff permanently without getting his hands dirty when Griff's prints are found on the murder weapon that kills Foster.

But why would Griff kill Foster? Why would he leave evidence?

Play Dirty by Sandra Brown
Griff was back from prison, he had thrown a football game that he played in for the mob.
Story also follows a couple who wants to pay him to impregnate his wife so they can have a child.
Once he's back in society others from his past find him and that puts his work in
Show More
jeopardy and in harms way.
He goes back to reconnect with the coach and his wife who had rescued him when his mother left him when he was a teen. They had moved him into their house and treated him like their son.
Author describes scenes and feelings to make you feel like you are there yourself. Story entwines with others he's resumed contact with. Problem is those who want him to be stopped and taking it out on them.
Liked to hear of the couples airline company among others as they redo the whole thing from the bottom up.
Tense scenes as the detective has a vendetta against Griff and wants to see him on death row... Sex scenes.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Cheesy, but a guilty pleasure kind of read.

I chose this book because I wanted to try one of Sandra Brown's mysteries. I didn't much like the beginning, but hoped it would get better - and it definitely did! I couldn't stand the main character, Griff Burkett, a former NFL star just out of 5 years in prison for betting and throwing a game - I
Show More
don't think anyone would like him at that point. Certainly no one in the novel does. But the book goes on to have one of the most intriguing plots I've come across in a mystery (and I read so many mysteries, it's hard to find a fresh and different plot!), some very interesting characters, shocking twists, a most unlikely and oddly moving love story. It ended up being a great story on taking chances, on redemption, and on relationships. I think I probably liked the book the better for it's being on CD's than if I had read it. The narrator Victor Slezak does a terrific job. I ended up really enjoying this book. Will have to look into some more Sandra Browns.

Wasn't sure I would like the book at first. My interest built and the last 100 or so pages I couldn't put down until I finished.
