How many paperboys (or girls) are even left? A beautiful glimpse of something I'm pretty sure is gone forever.

This is a story about a young boy who has a paper route and his devoted dog who accompanies him. They work hard on their route and yet when "All the world is asleep except for the paperboy and his dog. And this is the time when they are the happiest." At the end of their route, they both go back to
Show More
bed satisfied that "their work is done." An endearing book to read to your child, especially at bedtime.

The Paperboy is a Caldecott Honor Book, so of course it has great illistrations. The book talks of the frienship between a boy and his dog and the job that he does delivering the newspaper when the rest of the world is still sleeping. It talks about the routine of the paperboy, and shows his
Show More
dedication to doing his job even though the circumstances are not always pleasant.

I enjoyed the pictures in this book as much as I enjoyed reading the book. Lots of students have paperroutes, though I think the reading level of this book would be for younger children, it could give them an idea of what an older child goes through each day to deliver the paper to their home.

You could use this as an idea of a job that children do and maybe a classroom activity of responsibilities that each child has at their own home. It could also be used referring to friendship between the boy and his dog to bring out some stories that their pets may do with them.

I thought this was a cute story with fantastic illustrations. The story was about a young boy who gets up and delivers his papers. The story takes you through his route with his dog. We see them deliver the papers in the dark and then the sun come up and the neighborhood starts to wake up. The
Show More
paperboy and his dog finish the route and head home to go back to bed and dream. The story was cute and I think would be interesting for kids. The illustrations are the best part. They are colorful and take up full pages. They Lots of color is used and the shadows and the skies are really interesting as it goes from dark to light outside.

This book is about a young boy who has a paper route. The paperboy must wake up early in the morning when it is still dark and cold outside. He eats his breakfast and leaves for his route before anyone else in the house is awake. He, and his dog have the route memorized and finish the route and
Show More
make it back home just as everyone in the house is waking up. He goes straight back to his room and crawls back into his bed and goes back to sleep.

Even though I liked the pictures in the book, I found them to be very dark. I also found it difficult to read due to the lettering blending in with the paintings. The story was simple but meaningful.

In the classroom I would use this book to discuss responsibility. We could talk about how even though the little boy does not want to get out of his warm bed, he does and makes sure that he does his job. After reading the book, I could assign the students small tasks/chores within the class for the students to be responsible for completing each day.

A quiet story of the simple routine of the neighborhood paperboy completing his morning job in the darkest hours before dawn when others are deep in sleep in the warmth of their beds. Only when the job is done and light begins to streak across the sky does the paperboy return to the world of sleep

and the land of dreams.

This book takes us with a young boy on his morning paper route. The illustrations are beautifully done with night time colors. This book shows how even a young person can take on responsibility, doing what they should and need to do when they have to...even when they might rather stay in bed.

This is a charming story that has an old-fashioned feel because many children in urban settings are probably not leaving in the dark, alone, to deliver papers to their neighbors on their bikes. But the setting is so peaceful and quiet, an older reader has no sense of concern for the boy and dog. I
Show More
think readers admire the boy's commitment because the text tells us it is hard to get up so early and it is hard to ride a bike loaded down with papers. I think readers will also relate to the boy's sense of happiness of a job well-done and the chance to be alone with his thoughts each morning.

This books works well as a read out loud. A teacher could then ask students what are some jobs they have in their households. These may be more like chores than jobs like the paperboy has. Depending on their age, children could write about their job and draw a picture illustrating themselves doing the job.

It’s hard to believe that The Paperboy was written and illustrated by the same guy who brought us Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants! The Paperboy is such a thoughtfully written and beautifully illustrated picture book that it seems out of character with Pilkey’s
Show More
ouvre. Nonetheless, this story of a responsible and industrious paperboy does bound from the page with verve of the CU, but lacking the bathroom humor. The exquisite illustrations emulate the paintings of Marc Chagall, in media, color, and style, and the writing is restrained and precise, relating the rounds of paperboy with straightforward style. Unlike CU, parents and teachers alike will take delight when their children read The Paperboy.

This is a good, contemplative book about a paperboy going through his route, waking at night and returning when his house awakens.

This book is about a young boy with a paper route. It talks about what his mornings are like when he delivers’ his papers. His dog also goes with him.

This is the first time I have read this book. My boys really liked it. They want a job now.

I would use this book when we discussed jobs, also a
Show More
good book to use when discussing responsibility.

The paperboy is about a boy who gets up very early everyday with his dog to deliver newspaper. The book shows a different early morning and a series of things the paperboy does when others are asleep.
Good illustration with crayons, simple but impressive.

This job helps a young and egocentric child appreciate the work that other people do, although the paper route is no longer like this. It also has beautiful illustrations that I child will admire as he or she is read to.

This is the story of the paperboy and how he works while everyone else is fast asleep. This book evokes a powerful message about the determination of a young boy to work hard and earn money. The illustrations are beautiful, portraying the quiet of the night and the waking of the early morning sun.

Plot: This book is about a young boy who has a paper route and it goes through his morning routine. He wakes up before everyone is up and goes through his route with his dog and enjoys himself because he knows he is doing a service to people.

Personal Reaction: Obviously since this is a Caldecott
Show More
winner I'm going to like the illustrations but, I also like the way the author conveys the boy's love of doing work for people.

Teaching Implications: The teaching supplement for this book is rather easy I would teach a lesson about work ethic and how important it is and how to follow directions properly.

Summary: This book was about a little boy who has a job as a paperboy. The boy gets up early while everyone is still in bed and rides a bicycle to deliver his papers. Along with him was his faithful dog. It talks about everyone in his family still being in bed when he leaves and when he gets back
Show More
everyone is up and getting around but he is getting back into bed.

Review: I liked this book. It was an example of a child who worked at a young age and could be used to show other children the importance of taking responsiblities seriously.

Extension: Talking to children about having jobs and even how the newspaper is delivered.

This shorter narrative shows how the young paperboy has to get up early and do his job of delivering the newspaper to his community. After doing his job in the silent morning, the community wakes up with the paperboy (and his dog) go back to bed.

Great book about Dav Pilkey's first job. His website
Show More
has an interview with him about this book that is very charming, and kids will love it. My students really enjoyed this at the beginning of our writing workshop unit.

Summary:
This book talks about what goes on in a paperboys life. When the paperboy gets up it is still dark outside and it is always cold even in the summer time. When it is cold in the winter it is hard for him to get out of bed. They quietly walk down stairs and eat breakfast along with his dog.
They quickly go out to the garage and fold the newspapers and place them in the red bad. He then gets on his bike and starts his route. The Paperboy knows it without even thinking. Little by little the world around him wake up. when the paperboy has delivered his last paper him and his dog race home. They head back home and crawl back into their warm beds to get ready for the next morning.

Personal:
I thought this book was a cute one. Very colorful and detailed pictures. I think reading this book will help children understand how this works.

Extension:
1. I would use this to help children understand what paperboys do and their jobs.
2. I would use this to explain that not all people work during the day.

The Paperboy
Story and paintings by Dav Pilkey

Summary:
The Paperboy is a story about a little boy and his dog. Every morning they wake up early and get ready to go deliver the paper. They do everything from getting dressed to eating breakfast together. They have great adventures together as they go
Show More
from house to house. The paperboy and his dog are very good at what they do. They know everything without even thinking what to do next. As the world is waking up, they are done delivering the paper. They then return home to get back in their warm bed.

Personal Reaction:
I really enjoyed this book. One of my favorite things about this book is the dog. I like that the dog gets up early and does everything with the little boy. I also think that kids would be drawn to that. I also like that this book has a lot of colorful paintings.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1.Make breakfast with your students.
2.Since the paintings in this book are so colorful and bright, you could have students paint what their idea of delivering the paper with their dog would be like. What kind of adventures would you and your pet come up with?

Loved the illustrations in this one, partly because I really like that part of the day (when I'm up and awake!).

Summary: The Paper Boy is a story of a young man who gets up before sunrise every morning. Every morning it is cold, but this doesn’t stop the paper from folding his papers and delivering them. As everyone else is sleeping the paper boy and his dog are getting their work done. However, as he
Show More
delivers his last papers he and his dog race back home only to see which one makes it back to bed first. After all, his work is done.

Personal Reaction: I loved this story and found myself thinking 8 A.M. isn’t too early to waking up, it could always be worse. As a young woman I wish I had the will power to work as hard as the paperboy does. This book shows that hard work pays off and when everyone else has to be awake the paperboy gets to dream because his hard work is done.

Classroom Extension Ideas: I think this book would be a great reader to teach on a lesson over responsibility. The paperboy is extremely responsible for waking up each morning before sunrise to fold papers and deliver them. I also think this book would be a good teacher of loyalty. The paperboy is loyal to each and every house as his wakes up and delivers their newspapers. Also, children need to get a sense of how hard work does pay off.

Summary of the Book:

The Paper Boy is about a little boy who delivers news papers daily with his dog. While the world is still asleep, he is up, dressed and has already eaten his breakfast, exits out the door quietly on his journey to deliver. When the last paper has been delivered the night’s
Show More
shadows has made an exchange with day light. His family is quietly awaking when he returns back home. He heads back to his room to return to a warm bed where he can dream.

Personal Reaction to the Book:

I liked this book; it left a lot of mystery. The book did not express weather the boy had to work or just enjoyed working. This book made me think of the responsibility of a child as he or she gets older. He had a routine; he was not disruptive and displayed maturity.

Extension Ideas:

1. Student can be challenged to use their imagination through creative writing to tell why this boy had a job.

2. Students can draw pictures of what they think the world looks like when everyone is asleep.

The Caldecott Book written by Dav Pilkey shows the difficult job that the paperboy has. While all the world is asleep, the paperboy is up delivering newspapers. As the paperboy and his dog are on their last newspaper, they go home and go to sleep, while the entire world is just waking up. The
Show More
illustrations in this book are great! it shows throughout the night to the early morning as the sun is rising. There is a small amount of text in the story, but fairly easy pictures to depict. Although the paperboy does not always want to wake up early, that is his job and it must get done!
