The concept of explaining the origins (or possible origins) of quilt squares is pretty cool, but I got annoyed with the author. She paints a very bleak picture of life and claims that just about everyone lived exactly that way during the 100 years post signing the Declaration of Independence, when

people lived a variety of ways/ lifestyles, and that was a period that included the industrial revolution- and the mountains of change that went with it. She also focuses a lot on men, and goes on and on about "what your fathers and brothers" would have been doing- your mother, according to her, sat around in the house all day (um, hello, women worked just as hard as the men did, and helped out as was needed), and your sisters apparently didn't exist, since she never mentioned them. She goes on about all the adventures the men were having that might have inspired some woman watching to make a quilt square. See why I'm annoyed?

This book is LENGTHY!!! It does explain the interesting patterns in relation to the trade of the sew-er, but what a YAWN!! Unless you are interested in quilt making this book is boring!! Age-group 7th grade+.
