I thought this book was very engaging and informative. The pictures were very captivating. I think that young students could relate to the monkey, because the monkey was only worried about his birthday, but in the end learned about how to keep the earth a clean place. Good information was given and

SUMMARY: This book takes place in a jungle. All of the animals were celebrating Earth Day, when monkey repeatedly tells them that it is his birthday. The animals plant trees, collect garbage, pick up litter, recycle, and use cloth bags to help keep the earth a clean place.

I liked this book because it was very informative. There was a lot to learn by reading this book. Students could easily read about ways to help save the planet earth such as: picking up litter, recycling bottles, cans, and glasses, planting trees, and using cloth bags. This book was very engaging

and young students could relate to the monkey. Throughout the whole story monkey was only interested in celebrating his birthday. However, by the end of the story, monkey learned how we could keep the earth clean and pretty. Appropriate context and information was introduced to the readers in a creative way. I really liked the word plays on some of the pages. For example, a simile used in the story went, “and stomped her foot like a bag of lead”. If a student could not visualize what stomping looked like, the illustrations did a good job enhancing the image. Also, I really liked the enthusiastic writing used throughout this book. For each animal that was introduced, the reader could use different voices, making the story even more engaging and interesting. The main message for this story is to inform readers on how to save/clean the earth, as well as acknowledging the birthdays of friends.

Summary: The lion told all the jungle animals that today was Earth Day. The monkey went up to the animals and said that it wasn't earth day, it was his birthday. The elephant got mad and told the monkey its earth day. The monkey went up to the crocodile and said the same thing and the crocodile got

mad again and told him it was earth day. The animals are all recycling together and the monkey went up to the giraffe while they were hanging recycling signs and told the giraffe it was his birthday and the giraffe again said it was earth day not the monkeys birthday. The animals were still recycling and the monkey went up to the hippo and said it was earth day. The hippo got mad and told the monkey it was earth day not his birthday. The monkey went up to the snake and the lion and said the same thing. Finally, the lion roared loudly and said that he was sick of the monkey saying it was his birthday when it was earth day. The monkey explained that it was his birthday and his mom brought a cake for everyone. The lion apologized and the animals all shared the cake with one another.

Argument: I thought this book was a really cute way to work on rhyming words as well as recycling tips. Every time one of the animals told the monkey that it wasn't his birthday, the book would share recycling tips which I thought was really cute. This could help explain recycling concepts to children as well as give them ideas of things to do for earth day. Another thing I liked about this book was all the rhymes it used throughout the book. It made the book really easy to follow with a nice flow. The pictures are very detailed as well and add to the description of what is happening in the text.

Earth Day, Birthday! is an poetry book that is a story about Earth Day. The main characters in the book are animals and the monkey keeps saying it’s his birthday and the other animals tell him its not. Then, the book continues and the animals go through and do different things to help the Earth.

Overall, I thought this was a really cute way to incorporate Earth day and recycling into a children’s picture book. The author used different messages in the pictures to encourage readers to recycle and do different things to help the Earth. For example, the animals are cleaning up bottles and trash and creating a compost bucket. The compost bucket had a sign on it that said compost helps the garden grow. This encourages the readers who see these signs to create their own compost buckets. I enjoyed this book and thought it was really cute. I think that the main message is to respect the Earth and all that it does for you. The book rhymed and each stanza rhymed but it was also a cute book for readers to learn about Earth Day.
