This is a big favorite at our house. We read can read it over and over again and never get tired of Grandma Tildy and her house full of pets. We are quite pleased when she finally concedes and lets the elephant move in. Who could resist a crying elephant? And we always cheer when elephant saves the

day and walks them to the tropics.

Funny story, especially with younger kids if you can get them to shout, "But no elephants!"

Grandma Tilde works hard all day. She has no time for play. One day, the pet man comes to her house.

Grandma Tilde starts buying the pets that the man has to sell, stating "very well... but no elephants!" The animals provide her with company and help her with her daily life.

As winter comes, the only

animal left for the pet man to sell is the elephant, which she rails against, but ends up getting left with anyway. The elephant brings disaster upon Grandma Tilde... but saves the day in the end.

A fabulous book to read with children. This book was my absolute favorite as a child and I can still recite passages verbatim. I still have my copy of it and I'm not giving it up.

Wonderful repetitive book for young children. They feel for the elephant as he is turned away repeatedly, but love to shout, "but no elephants". When the elephant saves the day at the end the children are relieved and satisfied. they ask for this one again and again.

This story is about Grandma Tildy who lived alone and worked hard everyday. She had no time to play. A man came by and sold Grandma Tildy a canary, a beaver, a turtle, and a woodpecker. All the animals helped her do her work and she was happy. She refused to buy an elephant because her house was

small. The man left the elephant anyway. It snowed hard and they ran out of food. Then, the elephant picked up the house and walked them South to a sunny place. This story would teach children that when you are kind to others they help you and make you happier. Even the elephant who she didn't like or want made her happy in the end.

"But no Elephants" is a story about a little old lady who buys a bunch of pets from a man selling them to her. He always has an elephant with him, but she's never willing to buy it, until the winter comes. She finally buys it, and hilarious things happen. I really liked this book and I would use it
Show More
for grades K-3. I think the overall theme is acceptance and love.

I saw this the other day and I remembered that I used to read this all the time when I was small. I couldn't remember much about it from when I was little, besides the pictures of the elephant. I have some vague notions that it used to make me sad and then super happy at the end. Which is kind of
Show More
how it made me feel reading it now.
