Being pretty unfamiliar with the 19th century and what life was like back then, reading this book made me understand just a little bit more. The sisters themselves go through so much hardship, losing loved ones along the way, but they stick together and find that being strong TOGETHER is what is

most important to them. Life was simpler back then, but what was considered "the better life" is similar to what we think today when we think people need to have money, fashion, and a rich partner to be happy. These girls learn that that is not all that is important. The copy that I have includes black and white illustrations that are simple but gets a point across with each chapter that goes by. There's probably at least once picture in every chapter, giving me a vague picture of what some of the characters might look like.

Well, there isn't really anything that I can say about this book that many don't already know about.

I initially watched the 1994 version of this movie and really enjoyed it. I never would have thought, 19 years later, I'd be reading the book because back then, I wasn't much of a [Book]

reader...Especially of the classics. I read, but not often & it was usually centered around History of some sort (usually the Civil Rights Movement or Slavery)...

So, when I went into this book, I kind of knew what to expect but didn't quite remember all the details.

These Great Illustrated Classics, I believe, are the abridged version of the books to make it easier for younger readers to read the books and understand the language...I do own another copy of it which I believe is the full version of the book. I may read that version one day..But there are so many books I want to get to, I am not sure yet, but, I did really enjoy this story...

If you want to get into reading classics and still understand much of the language, these versions of books are one way to read them & still get a good jist of what the story is about.
