Another science book that I really like is the Scholastic book From Tadpole to Frog by Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld. Dwight Kuhn took the photographs for this book. This book gives an up-close look at the cycle of frogs from egg to adult. The book was written for K-2nd grade so the text is simple and

the pictures are large. Each part of the frog’s development is clearly shown. The book also provides age appropriate vocabulary words such as spawn, tadpole, gills, lungs, hind feet, and webbed feet. The pictures help reinforce the readers understanding of these new words.
There are several places throughout the book called “Take a closer look.” On these pages, a magnified picture of a frog egg, tadpole gills, webbed feet, and a tadpole’s mouth is shown. There is a glossary of terms at the end of the book.
I would use this book as part of a science lesson on frogs. I would bring a frog and frog eggs (from my pond) into the classroom to observe with the class. The class would record any growth or changes that the eggs, tadpole, or frogs made. The book would provide easy to understand information to prepare the students for changes they should be looking for.

I really liked this book. I felt like it went into great detail, but not to heavy on the information about the life cycle of a frog. I thought the pictures were really great too. Very clear and easy to understand. Would definitely share with my students.

This book pairs bright green pages and sparse, oversized text with close-up photographs of the different stages of development for tadpoles. The photos are large and well detailed, and clearly show what is described in the book. The greens and oranges dominate the color scheme and make the book

more inviting, and the simple vocabulary and short length make it perfect for beginning readers. The last page even has tips for how to incorporate the book into a real lesson by going to the library and researching the subject, and exploring nature in ponds. The brightness and clarity will engage readers, and the facts in the book are presented accurately, in a way that children can understand. It's a great introduction to both the natural world and nonfiction books.
