Christmas In The Trenches is a fictional account of the Christmas Truce of 1914 which halted the fighting of World War I for short period of time while soldiers of different sides recognized the holiday. It is a great story about shared values and finding common ground with others. I would

recommend this to children of all ages.

This is a story about a grandfather telling his grandchildren about the christmas that he spent in a trench during World War I. He tells his grandchildren what he did in the war, and what he had to do in order to stay safe so that the enemies couldn't find out where they were staying. His

grandchildren believe that their grandpa is a hero and accomplished many things in his lifetime.

Response - I love this book. It beautifully relates one of the most important Christmas events while reminding us that even during war there is still goodness. The Author's Note and Historical Note provide great historical insight.

Curricular connection - I would read this book in December and

include it in a unit on WWI and on peace and resolution.

Christmas in the Trenches is a story about a grandfather sharing an experience he had during World War I with this grandchildren. The grandfather explains how one Christmas the Germans and British had a ceasefire to celebrate Christmas together. While the book is fiction, it is about an actual

event. I had never heard about this before and thought it was fascinating. I especially loved how the author provided historical information in the back of the book about the event. In addition, the illustrations in the book were fantastic.

Summary: This book is based off of a song by John McCutheon that was brought to him from inspiration from an old woman in Alabama. This story is true and well- known throughout Europe.

Personal connection: I am interested in history and remember WWI being one of the saddest topics that I have ever

learned about.
