Media reviews

Thanks to the popular singsong verse "In fourteen hundred ninety-two / Columbus sailed the ocean blue," the year in which Christopher Columbus weighed anchor may be history's best remembered date. Marzollo... has expanded the ditty to include some basic details about the man and his voyage.... The

tale is surprisingly clear and complete, despite the brief and simple text. ... Bjorkman's lighthearted illustrations are top-notch--his oceanscapes are suitably sweeping, his ships imposing, his characters endearing in their naivete. ... This engrossing introduction to history for young children is a standout in the spate of books being produced to honor the 500th anniversary of the landmark voyage. Ages 4-8.

Columbus who sailed the ocean blue and found the bahamas. Indians helped the sailors with food, and columbus would make several trips. Then in the bahamas then would trade merchandise for gold and sail back to spain.

In this time we wouldn't have the spices if it wasn't foe columbus. This story is a

great for imagination and any child should know about him.

In the class room is great telling why we celebrate columbus day. Having the students to put togther columbus from paper and put all around the classroom.

This was a short and sweet summary of Columbus' voyage to the New World. And it rhymes! Although not much detail is given, this is such a great way to teach younger elementary students about this story. The pictures are sweet as well.

Loved this book. It tells the story of Christopher Columbus in a very simple manner. The story rhymes the entire way through, which is exciting for the reader. The illustrations are water color and help tell the story. I also like that fact that the book offers the reader background information

about Columbus at the beginning of the book. I would highly recommend this book, especially to elementary teachers for their classroom.

I remember this book from either first or second grade and I loved it. I did a project on it as well. It is a relitively short rhyming book, but gives you the story of Christopher Colombus and his adventure accidentially stumbling on the Bahamas instead of India.

This book is written for second graders but you could also read it to your kindergarten or first grade students. It would be a great one to read on Columbus Day. It talks about dreams coming true while using a rhyme scheme.

This is a simple text that ends too soon, but retells the traditional poem that everyone knows or was taught in school about Christopher Columbus. There is a foreword titled background facts that doe a brief yet concise job of sharing some important facts about Columbus, though it leaves out a lot

of the more interesting details of his life. Thiss would work as an introductory text to who the guy was, but could use some serious supplemental information to flesh out the actual guy.
