After emancipation, Booker began a five-hundred-mile journey, mostly on foot, to Hampton Institute, taking his first of many steps towards a college degree. When he arrived, he had just fifty cents in his pocket and a dream about to come true."

An exceptionally well-written and stunningly illustrated introduction to Booker T. Washington. This should be a strong contender for the Caldecott Medal.

A great story about over coming obstacles to become an educated reader. Great to help your struggling readers see that they can read too and do something with their lives.

This book would be interesting to read. It is an event that revolves around Booker T. Washington. I think this is book that could be used as an example of a success story to motivate students to be all they can be.
