Located on Lake Cootharaba, the largest lake on the Noosa River system, Boreen Point has long been a mecca for sailors, fishing enthusiasts, nature lovers, artists and holiday makers and was possibly the first tourist resort in the Noosa region. 'Boreen Point...not just any small town' is an illustrated history of the township and nearby places in the Cooloola Section of the Great Sandy National Park from 1871 to 2021. While the main focus is on the establishment and development of Boreen Point, it is also a regional history covering themes that link it with broader economic, social, cultural and environmental developments in the Gympie/Noosa region. It includes early accounts of Aboriginal-European contact and highlights the impact of colonisation on the Kabi Kabi traditional owners. It also sheds light on the cohesiveness of the community and the inspiration that Boreen Point and the lakeside environment have provided for artists of all kinds, the most notable being renowned Australian poet and short story writer Judith Wright who was a regular visitor from 1953 to the mid-1960s, a period that was critical in shaping her as an environmental and Aboriginal activist.… (more)
