This is a quick read for preschoolers that describe rare animals, their homes, and what they eat. At the end of the book there is extra information to learn about animals and the things they need.

This book is about the lives of animals before and after their environment is detroyed by people who uses the land for building homes. I would use this with children when talking about communities.

I enjoyed the artwork of animal habitats in this book, as well as the last few pages, which explain how to create a backyard habitat for some animals.

Where Once There Was a Wood is an eye-opening book about wildlife habitat. I liked the book because it had a good message that people should give as much habitat to animals as they can because humans have taken so many habitats from animals already. To drive across the message of the book the

author repeated the phrase “where once”, for example “where once the ferns unfurled and purple violets grew.” The phrase is used multiple times like that with different aspects of nature that have gone missing, which expresses the point that a lot of wildlife has lost its habitat. The illustrations on each page show the animal or type of plant that has lost its habitat and is mentioned on the page to allow the reader to connect to the animal or plant that is losing it habitat. This book made me think more about how people have taken away land from wildlife and I will try to be more conscientious about how I treat the land animals do have left.
