Library's review
For more than half a century, since he arrived from Germany in 1953, Fred Herzog has roamed Vancouver's streets with his camera. His eye dwells on the raw urbn underbelly of the city: second-hand shops, vacant lots, barbershops and greasy spoons, crowded with people and their stuttering dreams.

Herzog draws upon documentary traditions on photography while incorporating an outsider's sensitivity to a new enviroment. His bold use of colour--highly unusual for the 1950s and 60s--adds to the power of his huge. and hugely influential, body of work. 'Fred Herzog: Vancouver Photographs' is published to coincide iwth the first major exhibition of his work, held at the Vancouver Art Gallery from January 25 to May 13, 2007. The text includes essays by Grant Arnold and Michael Turner and a lengthy interview with the artist.'(Abstract from sleeve)
